The DECHEMA Research Institute (DFI) in Frankfurt am Main is a non-profit foundation under civil law that is dedicated to interdisciplinary research for sustainable technologies.
working area
The aim of the work of the non-profit and independent research institute is to promote a competitive, resource and environmentally friendly industrial society . The main areas of work are in the areas of energy efficiency , resource conservation and the biologization of chemistry and are based on the core competencies in the research disciplines technical chemistry , electrochemistry , corrosion , high-temperature materials and biotechnology , which have been represented at the institute since it was founded. Here, the institute brings its internationally recognized expertise, built up over five decades, from basic research to application-oriented development, to research.
Current research focuses are fuel cells and metal-air battery systems, innovative corrosion protection at low and high temperatures, new recycling methods for valuable materials , development of biological raw material sources and biological production methods for chemical precursors.
The latest trends in research are, for example, a microbially operated galvanic cell and the biotechnological production of methanol as a fuel. Research is also currently underway on the development of new solar cells based on titanium dioxide and on photocatalysis to break down nitrogen oxides in the air. Modern analysis devices such as HPLC systems, combined with gas chromatographs and mass spectrometers , but also scanning electron microscopes and individually designed photoreactors are available for this purpose. Microbiological laboratories with different security levels can also be used.
In addition to research, the DECHEMA research institute offers a wide range of advanced training courses. Seminars on the subjects of process engineering, electrochemistry, corrosion, biotechnology and other cross-sectional topics are offered.
history
The institute was founded in 1961 under the name "DECHEMA Institute" as part of DECHEMA . In 1970 it was renamed the " Karl Winnacker Institute". Since March 1, 2012, it has been independent under the name “DECHEMA Research Institute” in the form of a non-profit foundation under civil law, recognized by the Darmstadt Regional Council under Az. I13-25d04 / 11- (12) -720.
financing
The foundation is backed by around 20 industrial and private donors; 2/3 of the funding comes from projects (publicly funded projects and industrial contract research) and 1/3 from participations and donations. The industrial clients for research come mainly from the areas of apparatus and plant engineering, chemical industry , biotechnology , process engineering , energy technology , materials and surface technology , automotive technology and aviation technology . The publicly funded projects are largely financed by the sponsors BMWi ( IGF - AiF ), BMBF , BMVEL , DFG , EU and DBU .
Involvement
The institute is part of the DECHEMA competence network, to which DECHEMA eV and DECHEMA Exhibition GmbH also belong, and offers not only research, but also a wide range of further training courses and advice on the topics represented by this network.
The DECHEMA research institute is a founding member of the Deutsche Industrieforschungsgemeinschaft Konrad Zuse.
