Leopold Krug (economist)

Johann Leopold Krug (born July 7, 1770 in Halle (Saale) , † April 16, 1843 at Gut Mühlenbeck ) was a German economist and statistician .

Leopold Krug, son of a field clerk and later controller of the royal wooden magazines, studied theology from 1787 to 1792 and then became a catechist in Bernburg . He later embarked on a different professional career and turned to geography , statistics and economics . In 1800 he got a job as a state registrar . From 1805 to 1834 he was significantly involved in the establishment and expansion of the Prussian Statistical Bureau . During this time he carried out numerous statistical and economic studies. In 1804/1805 he edited the Annals of the Prussian State Economy and Statistics together with Ludwig Heinrich von Jakob . After retiring from civil service, he lived on his Mühlenbeck estate from 1835.

In 1826 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .
