Lepidophloios is one of several as dandruff tree designated tree-shaped genera of lepidodendrales , a group of lycopodiopsida that the coal woods are the carbon time formed.

features

Lepidophloios was a tree-shaped plant. They were somewhat smaller than the lepidodendron species that grew together with them , which they otherwise largely resembled. The distinguishing feature between the two genera is the structure of the leaf bases: In Lepidophloios the leaf bases are arranged in a flat screw on the stem axis, as in the other genera, but the leaf bases are flattened and wider than high. They overlap with the leaf bases below them, similar to roof tiles. The leaves bent up abruptly. The leaf scar that the leaves left behind after falling off is in the lower third of the leaf cushion. Below the leaf scar there is no Parichnos -Narben as Lepidodendron . The ligula started directly above the leaf scar.

Many trunks of Lepidophloios have large, circular or elliptical scars on the trunk surface. These are interpreted as scars from vegetative side branches that were shed during normal growth or as scars from specialized branches that carried groups of cones. Trunks with helically arranged scars were previously listed as the genus Halonia , while those with opposing scars were listed as ulodendrons .
