Leptocereus assurgens is a species of plant in the genus Leptocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet assurgens comes from Latin , means 'becoming erect' and refers to the growth habit of the species.

description

Leptocereus assurgens has a shrubby growth with several prostrate to creeping shoots that are shorter than 1 meter. At their base, the shoots sometimes reach a diameter of up to 6 centimeters, at the top 1 to 26 centimeters. There are four to nine non-notched ribs . The needle-like, yellowish white to brownish thorns are 2 to 8 inches long. They can be divided into four central spines and up to 16 radial spines.

The light yellow flowers often appear in groups and are 2.5 to 4 inches long. Your pericarpel and the tube of flowers are thorny reddish. The fruits are densely thorn.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Leptocereus assurgens is widespread in western Cuba near Pinar del Río on limestone cliffs.

It was first described as Cereus assurgens in 1866 by August Grisebach . Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose put the species in the genus Leptocereus in 1909 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
