Leptocereus grantianus is a species of plant in the genus Leptocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet grantianus honors the US major and zoologist Chapman Grant .

description

Leptocereus grantianus grows shrubby with ascending, upright branches and reaches heights of up to 1.5 meters. The cylindrical, segmented shoots reach a diameter of 3 to 5 centimeters. There are three to five low ribs that are noticeably notched. The one to three spines that do not last long are black and only 1 millimeter long.

The salver-shaped, cream-colored flowers appear on terminal areoles and open at night. They are 3 to 6 inches long. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with scales and a few black thorns. The spherical fruits have a diameter of up to 4 inches long.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Leptocereus grantianus is endemic to the Puerto Rico island of Culebra .

It was first described in 1933 by Nathaniel Lord Britton . A synonym is Neoabbottia grantiana (Britton) Buxb. (1966).

Leptocereus grantianus is listed as Endangered in the US Endangered Species Act . In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered. In the only known population there are only fewer than 50 individual plants left.
