Location and geography

The island is located in the Caribbean a good 27 kilometers east of the main island of Puerto Rico and is one of the Spanish Virgin Islands , the western subgroup of the Virgin Islands . About 19 kilometers to the west is the island of Saint Thomas, which belongs to the American Virgin Islands .

Culebra has an irregular shape with a headland extending far to the north and a deeply cutting bay in the south. With a length of eleven kilometers and a maximum width of eight kilometers, it has an area of 30.1 km².

Arrival and tourism

Culebra has a small airport with regular flights to Puerto Rico and the major neighboring islands. The island can also be reached with regular and reasonably priced ferry connections. There are three ships daily from the mainland; car ferries are also used at irregular intervals.

Due to the nature and some very beautiful beaches, the island is a popular holiday destination, especially with Puerto Ricans and US citizens. Flamenco Beach, one of the main beaches on the island, is sometimes counted among the ten most beautiful sandy beaches in the Caribbean.

Most of the smaller neighboring islands, including Culebrita , but not Cayo Norte, and parts of the island (two stretches of coast in the southeast) are protected as the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge .

Flamenco Beach in the north of Culebra was named the eighth most beautiful beach in the world by TripAdvisor in 2015.
