features

Construction of the Imago

Underside of the wing of the subspecies Leptophobia eleone eleone

The whitish, yellowish or grayish moths of the genus Leptophobia reach wingspans between 25 and 50 millimeters. Compared to the rest of the body, the antennae are very long. The second and third joint links of the button are the same size. The latter, however, is narrower. The two radius veins R1 and R2 in the forewing arise from the discoidal cell . In contrast to this, the radius veins R4 and R5 always start away from the discoidal cell. The median vein does not begin directly at the discoid cell either, but only after about a quarter of the distance to the wing tip. The artery delimiting the discoidal cell between the first and second median artery is, with a few exceptions in which it is of the same length, significantly shorter than that between the second and third median artery. In the hind wing the humeral sclerite is slightly curved at its base.

Construction of the caterpillar

The caterpillars have the physique typical of whites. They are green, with orange or blue markings in some cases, and hairy.

habitat

The representatives of the genus Leptophobia can often be found in ravines or open pastures in the mountains where sweet grasses (Poaceae) grow. The preferred food plants include species from the families of capers (Capparaceae), cruciferous plants (Brassicaceae) and nasturtiums (Tropaeolaceae).

Systematics

Phylogenetics

The phylogenetic position of the genus is still not clear. Alexander Barrett Klots put Leptophobia next to Leuciacria and Elodina as early as 1933 , but noted uncertainties. Even a more recent study in 2006 could not resolve this uncertainty.
