Leptophobia eleone is a butterfly from the family of Whites (Pieridae). In addition to L. eleone eleone, there is also the subspecies L. eleone denigrata .
features
The moths have a wingspan of about 40 millimeters. The dominant color of the upper side of the wing is yellowish with a black pattern on the edges of the fore wing. In females and the subspecies L. eleone denigrata , this pattern is significantly wider, which is also alluded to by the scientific name of the subspecies. Furthermore, the yellow tone of the subspecies L. eleone eleone is much stronger. The underside of the wings and the veins are monochrome white.
Occurrence
The animals are especially widespread in the eastern cordillera of the Andes between Venezuela and Bolivia . They are most common between 2500 and 3300 meters above sea level. The subspecies L. eleone denigrata , endemic to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, is also common up to 2000 meters.
Food of the caterpillars
The caterpillars feed mainly on plants from the genera cabbage ( Brassica ) and nasturtium ( Tropaeolum ), whereby they also adopt Lepidium ruderale when rearing .
