The Leptopodomorpha are next to the Nepomorpha , Gerromorpha , Dipsocoromorpha , Pentatomomorpha , Enicocephalomorpha and Cimicomorpha a suborder of the bugs (Heteroptera). 4 families, 42 genera and more than 380 species are known worldwide. They are predominantly hygrophilous , living in bank biotopes or near water. Most species live in temperate zones.
Features and way of life
The bugs have three to five distinct cells in the membranes of the hemi-layers ( hemielytres ) but no other veins. They are usually brownish and dark in color in adaptation to their surroundings. On the underside they have pit hairs ( trichobothria ). With mostly very large, often kidney-shaped compound eyes , they make their prey. They live mainly in places with no vegetation in swamps, on sandy, gravelly and muddy banks of water, as well as a number of halophilic species on the sea coasts. A representative of the Leptopodidae, Leptopus marmoratus , lives as an exception in rather dry locations under stones. The animals are very agile and run around on the ground without ever stepping on living plants or sucking on them. The bugs are all predatory and also suckle dead animal material. Several species are equipped with good jumping ability ( Saldidae ). When disturbed, they usually flee in long leaps.
