Leslie Brooks (born July 13, 1922 in Lincoln , Nebraska , † July 1, 2011 in Sherman Oaks , California ; actually Virginia Leslie Gettman ) was an American film actress .

Life

Brooks was born Virginia Leslie Gettman in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1922. However, she grew up in Los Angeles , where she attended Hollywood High School. Initially working as a model, she received a contract with Warner Brothers in 1941 . There she played small supporting roles under the name Lorraine Gettman, for which she was often not mentioned in the credits. When Columbia Pictures bought out her contract, her roles grew. She then played mostly the calculating rival of the leading actress, such as Rita Hayworth in the film musical Es tanzt die Göttin (1944), where she appeared as an ambitious showgirl. As early as 1942 she was seen in a Hayworth musical. In You were never more enchanting , she played Hayworth's sister who was willing to marry. In 1945 Brooks appeared again alongside Hayworth in Tonight and Every Night . Brooks also played leading roles, such as in The Man Who Dared (1946) alongside George Macready or in the comedy film Cigarette Girl (1947), but never made the big break. In 1948 she retired from the film business.

From 1945 to 1948 she was married to the actor Donald Anthony Shay. The marriage had a daughter, Leslie Victoria (born November 8, 1945). With her second husband Russ Vincent, whom she married in 1950, she had three other daughters: Dorena Marla (born August 18, 1954), Gina (born April 6, 1956) and Darla (born April 30, 1960). After giving birth to their youngest daughter, Brooks moved her family from Los Angeles to Hawaii . In 1971 she appeared in How's Your Love Life? one last time in a film after a long film break.

Leslie Brooks died in Sherman Oaks, California in 2011 at the age of 88. Her grave is in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles.
