The plant is an upright shrub that can reach heights of one to three meters. The branches are slightly hairy. The leaves are in three parts, the middle leaflet is 1.5 to 6 cm long and 1 to 3.5 cm wide. The underside of the leaves is light green and hairy. The dwarf form Lespedeza bicolor 'Yakushima' is only 30 to 50 cm high.

The purple flowers appear from July to September in long, axillary, overhanging panicles . The calyx is 0.5 cm long, the free tips are short. The petals reach 1 cm in length, they are colored purple or rarely white. The solitary, hairy pod is 1 × 0.5 cm in size and is asymmetrically inverted-egg-shaped.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22, less often 18 or 42.

distribution

The two-colored bush clover is widespread in China, as well as in neighboring Russia, Japan, Korea and possibly Mongolia. It grows on the edges of forests and in bushes at altitudes of 100 to 1000 meters.

use

The two-tone bush clover is planted to prevent erosion. Oil can be extracted from the seeds, the branches are used for wickerwork, and tea is made from the leaves. The plant is occasionally cultivated as an ornamental shrub in parks and gardens in Central Europe.
