The Vocabolario dei dialetti della Svizzera italiana , abbreviated VSI, is a multi-volume dictionary that has been published since 1952 and covers the vocabulary of the dialects spoken in Italian-speaking southern Switzerland .

Type and characteristics

Alongside the Swiss Idiotikon (Zurich), the Glossaire des patois de la Suisse romande (Neuchâtel) and the Dicziunari Rumantsch Grischun (Chur), the VSI is one of the four national dictionaries of Switzerland and thus one of the many-volume lexicographical lexicographicals developed on a scientific basis Reference works of this country.

The dictionary documents the vocabulary of the Lombard dialects spoken in the canton of Ticino and in the southern Graubünden valleys of Misox , Calancatal , Bergell and Puschlav . In addition to the exact registration of all sound and form variants, it attaches particular importance to recording the older material culture and customs of southern Switzerland. Like the other three national dictionaries, this is a work of encyclopedic character that covers both linguistic and lexical as well as ethnographic and folkloric claims.

History and publication

The VSI was founded in 1907 on the initiative of Carlo Salvioni . Four decades of collecting and organizing resulted in extensive data material, which is now archived in 1,350 card boxes and also includes 127 so-called phonetic notebooks in which the respective phonetic relationships of the various local dialects are recorded. Publication began in 1952. To date, seven volumes have been completed ( A to cuzzöö ), the eighth volume is being delivered.

From 1995, parallel to the VSI, work was carried out on the Lessico dialettale della Svizzera italiana (LSI) , a five-volume, purely lexical version of the Vocabolario. This was presented to the public in 2004. A two-volume dictionary called Repertorio italiano - dialetti (RID) was published in 2013, in reverse, i.e. standard Italian - Lombardy arranged .

Institutional involvement

The VSI is now a project of the Centro di dialettologia e di etnografia in Bellinzona, founded in 2002 . In addition to the Vocabolario, it publishes other linguistic and folkloric publications, coordinates the various local museums in Ticino, organizes summer courses in dialectology and maintains an extensive library and photo library.

The Centro is financed by the canton of Ticino, the federal government and through the sale of its own publications. Funding for editing the VSI is mainly provided by the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences .
