The Lessing-Gymnasium is a state high school in Lampertheim ( Hesse ). It was founded in 1987 as an undergraduate high school and has been named after the German poet and educator Gotthold Ephraim Lessing since 1988 .

School history

In Lampertheim there had been an upper secondary school since 1974. It was converted into an undergraduate high school on June 1st, 1987 by a resolution of the district council. This was the first high school to be established since the 1960s. The founding of the school, originally called "Riedgymnasium", was preceded by a wave of children emigrating to the much older grammar schools in Bensheim, Heppenheim or Gernsheim and a declining number of pupils at the upper level Lampertheim.

With around 1200 students, it is one of the largest grammar schools in the Bergstrasse / Odenwaldkreis district. About one third of the students are divided between the upper grades and two thirds between the lower and middle grades.

The headmaster's post was held by Helmut Walter, who retired in 1998 and initially handed over the management of the ever-growing grammar school to Dieter Koch for two years. In 2000 Jürgen Haist finally took over the vacant post. During his term of office, the opening of the new music building (2005), as well as the construction of the new cafeteria (2008) as well as the membership in the association for scientific excellence centers, fell in the course of the all-day care of the students, which became necessary due to the shortening of the high school time in schools (MINT-EC). The LGL also received the recognition "School with a musical focus" and the "Seal of approval for gifted students". In addition, the Lampertheim school network "TTT" (technology, teams, talents) was founded and expanded. The Lessing-Gymnasium was recently included in the "Hessen.eEducation" funding program, which aims to encourage schoolchildren to use new media. Silke Weimar-Ekdur has been the director of the grammar school since the second half of the 2014/2015 school year.

Focus of work

The so-called MINT subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural science and technology) are particularly encouraged at the LGL. Over 20 scientific working groups as well as a separate elective can be attended.

Weaker students can work through their deficits in the LGL's “learning agency” or the “compensation courses”.

As a “school with a musical focus”, musical talents are to be promoted in addition to the MINT subjects. Both instrumental and vocal talents can get involved in various working groups.

Various courses are offered bilingually, with English as the main language. In the sporting area, water sports are particularly encouraged. The school has its own jetty and a canoe fleet with 30 boats.
