Lestiphorus bicinctus is a hymenoptera fromthe Crabronidae family .
features
The wasp reaches a body length of 9 to 11 millimeters (females) or 7 to 9 millimeters (males). The lobe on the pronotum is colored yellow. On the second tergite of the abdomen there is a wide yellow band. These two features distinguish the species from the similar Lestiphorus bilunatus , which has a black lobe and only laterally has yellow spots on the second tergite.
Occurrence
The species is widespread in southern and central Europe and inhabits forest edges and clearings, but also occurs in human settlement areas. The species flies from June to early September. It is common in Central Europe, but used to be rare in many places. In the meantime, it has also been proven in the human settlement area.
Way of life
The females create their nests in the ground. The brood is supplied with foam cicadas of the genera Philaenus and Aphrophora . The adults can often be seen visiting the flowers of parsnip ( Pastinaca sativa ) and forest angelica ( Angelica sylvestris ).
