Personal coat of arms

Leszek was the eldest son of Duke Casimir of Kujawien and a half-brother of the future Polish King Władysław I. Ellenlang and a grandson of Conrad of Mazovia . Since Bolesław the Shameful had no male offspring, he decided to hand over the Krakow throne to Leszek from Łęczyca and Sieradz, the son of his cousin Casimir of Kuyavia. This time all of this happened without a fight for seniority .

During his reign, the first ideas of the reunified Kingdom of Poland emerged in Lesser Poland, which ultimately led to the unification of the Polish state after almost two centuries of division. Leszek, known as black after his hair color, professed the ideology of uniting the country by seeking the support of the citizens and fighting the uprisings of the nobility. However, he could not achieve his goal. A year before his death, in 1287, the country was again invaded by Tatars of the Nogaier horde under Kara Nogai Khan and Leszek escaped to the Kingdom of Hungary . The invaders got as far as the gates of Krakow, but could not take the city. After his death, long-term controversy over the Krakow throne began.
