The Ákra Síderos lighthouse (also Akra Sidhero , Cape Sidero ) stands on the old fortress in Corfu , the capital of the Greek island of the same name, built by the Venetians in the 16th century . The oldest Greek lighthouse still in operation illuminates a sector from 112 ° 30 'to 045 ° and has a range of 13 nautical miles .
History and structure
The eight meter high lighthouse was built by the British in 1828 on the land tower of the Old Fortress to secure the entrance to the main port of their protectorate of the Ionian Islands . The round tower made of natural stone is unplastered. The lantern is above a gallery and under a green painted roof. The lighthouse keeper's house hugs the base of the tower.
The simple solid light of 1828 was soon replaced by a fourth order Fresnel lens from the Paris-based company Sautter, Lemonier et Cie. replaced. Today the tower has a modern beacon with a drum lens.
