As vaginal discharge ( vaginal discharge ) is referred to enhanced secretion of secretions from the vagina .

Vaginal discharge in women

Normal vaginal discharge.

The normal vaginal secretion of women consists of epithelial cells and capillary fluid from the vagina, vaginal flora , glandular secretions from the cervix and metabolic products. It is whitish and creamy, has a pH of 3.8 to 4.4. About 5 ml are formed per day. At the time of the rupture of the follicle , the secretion is slightly increased, somewhat clearer and more fluid, but always almost odorless. Even during sexual arousal , vaginal secretions are increasingly formed ( lubrication ).

Vaginal discharge from gonorrhea .

An increased vaginal discharge, also known as leucorrhea ( white flow , vaginal catarrh , fluoro albus ), and changes in appearance, color and smell are typical signs of vaginal inflammation (colpitis). This can be infectious ( trichomoniasis , vaginal fungal infection , bacterial colpitis , amine colpitis ) or caused by foreign bodies, but also by a lack of estrogen , increased production of gestagens and estrogens during pregnancy or incorrect intimate hygiene (rinsing with agents that damage the vaginal environment).

Vaginal discharge can also come from the cervix. Possible causes are premenstrual discharge, increased secretion of the cervical glands, infections ( gonorrhea , chlamydiosis ), polyps and tears in the cervix and cervical cancer . In addition, the discharge can also come from the body of the uterus ( endometritis , pyometra , hemometra , mukometra , uterine tumors) or from the fallopian tubes ( adnexitis , tumors). To protect their laundry from secretions, some women wear panty liners (see also menstrual hygiene ).

Vaginal discharge in the bitch

In bitches , the physiological vaginal secretions are composed similarly to those in women. In heat , the discharge increases significantly and becomes bloody, later flesh-colored.

Increased vaginal discharge outside of heat occurs especially with an open pyometra . Young dog vaginitis can also be a trigger in young bitches .

Vaginal discharge in cattle

In cows, pathological vaginal discharge occurs with vaginitis , cervicitis , endometritis , metritis or ovarian cysts . While vaginitis is rare in cattle and usually heals spontaneously, uterine inflammation (endometritis or metritis) is usually a problem. They occur mainly after calving in the puerperium , as an infection during artificial insemination and in infectious bovine rhinotracheitis at the end of the dry period.
