distribution

The disease is often symptom-free and is considered common.

root cause

The disease is caused by pathogens in the vagina and colpitis can precede it. The transmission can take place sexually with possible pathogens such as chlamydia , gonococci , mycoplasma , Escherichia coli , human papillomavirus (HPV), herpes simplex genitalis or non-infectious through intrauterine pessary , vaginal pessary and allergy to spermicide or condoms .

Clinical manifestations

Clinical criteria are:

  • Bleeding and vaginal discharge (fluor vaginalis).

With additional colpitis, corresponding symptoms can appear.

If the infection continues, endometritis and salpingitis can develop.

A complication can be a pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) with possible infertility , chronic pain in the pelvis or an extrauterine pregnancy . Infections with HPV are considered to be precancerous for cervical cancer .

diagnosis

The diagnosis is based on a colposcopy with a smear ; the infectious agent can be determined using PCR or HPV DNA tests.

therapy

Treatment depends on the identified cause. In the event of infections, the partner must also be treated. Hormone replacement therapy can be an option for people who are going through the menopause .
