The pelvic infection or pelvic inflammatory disease ( English pelvic inflammatory disease, PID ) is a collective term for gynecological infection-related inflammation in the pelvis .
In detail, these include:
- Salpingitis (inflammation of the fallopian tube )
- Oopheritis (inflammation of the ovary )
- Adnexitis
- Endometritis
- Cervicitis
- Uterine infections such as pyometra
Spreading to adjacent pelvic structures is possible.

The frequency is given as up to 10–20 diseases per 1,000 women of childbearing age per year.
root cause
The cause lies in an ascending infection of the vagina and cervix in the upper genital tract. The most common pathogen is Chlamydia trachomatis , but Neisseria gonorrhoeae , Gardnerella vaginalis , Haemophilus influenzae or Peptococcus and Bacteroides also occur. Several pathogens are present in around 30–40%.
Clinical manifestations
The clinical picture is very variable, from patients without complaints to acute pain, mostly in the lower abdomen. Often there is only a vaginal discharge .
As a complication , it can lead to abscess formation , to peritonitis and Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome come a spread of inflammation into the right upper abdomen.
Differential diagnosis
To be differentiated are: appendicitis, urinary tract infection , endometriosis , tumors of the adnexa .
The most important differential diagnosis is ectopic pregnancy .
