Leyla Birlik

Leyla Birlik (born March 3, 1974 in the Derik district ) is a Kurdish politician of the HDP . She was a member of the Turkish Parliament for Sirnak .

Life

Birlik graduated from high school. She is married and has one child. Her brother-in-law, Hacı Lokman Birlik, was killed by security forces and his body was dragged through the streets behind an armored vehicle.

On May 4, 2016, Birlik was arrested with her husband and released the next day.

Birlik was arrested on the night of November 3rd to 4th, 2016. She was released from custody on January 4, 2017.

On November 17, 2016, the Austrian politician Peter Pilz wanted to visit Leyla Birlik and other HDP MPs, but was evicted by the police. Leyla Birlik was sentenced to 1 year and 9 months in prison in January 2017 for insulting the head of state .

In August 2018, Leyla Birlik fled to Greece and applied for asylum. On December 10, 2018, Ahval News Agency reported that she had been sentenced to 18 months in prison for violating the Assembly Act by attending rallies in 2015.
