Derik

Derik ( Aramaic ܖܪܝܟܐ Dêrike, Kurdish Dêrika Çiyayê Mazî ) is a city and at the same time the name of a district in the Turkish province of Mardin in southeastern Anatolia . The city of Derik has 20,266 and the district 58,213 inhabitants (as of 2010). Derik is located in the northwest of the province and borders the provinces of Diyarbakır and Şanlıurfa .

Derik was founded between 1390 and 1400 and is 780 m above sea level . There are many Christian churches in the district. Most of the formerly numerous Christian Arameans and Armenians were murdered or deported in 1915. Today Kurds and Turks live in Derik .

Attractions

Sights are Rabat Castle (Kurdish: Qala Rebete), a castle built on a mountain in Roman times, and Qesra Qenco , a castle about 30 km from Derik, which was built at the end of the 19th century by the Qenco family of landowners whose current leader is Ahmet Türk.

Derik is famous for its olives . Olive trees grow on around two thirds of the urban area. Even the name of the local magazine "Zeytindali" (English: olive branch ) illustrates the presence of the olive culture in Derik. In addition to olives, pomegranates , various types of figs , apricots , peaches , almonds and many other fruits also grow here .

Derik is surrounded by mountains on all three sides. The highest mountain is Turcel . These mountains were cleared in the 1990s for security reasons because they gave shelter to the PKK guerrillas . A reforestation campaign is currently underway.

Work situation

Most of the inhabitants of Derik are employed in agriculture. Almost every family has a piece of land on which they plant fruits and vegetables for their own needs. Many families move to the metropolitan areas of the Black Sea coast or to large cities such as Istanbul and Izmir in summer as seasonal workers. The service sector has also grown in recent years.
