Ömerli (formerly Maserti ; Aramaic : ܡܐܥܣܪܜܐ Ma'asarte , Kurdish Mehsert ) is a town and at the same time the name of a district in the Turkish province of Mardin in southeastern Anatolia . The city of Ömerli has 6,245 and the district 14,629 inhabitants (as of 2012). Ömerli is centrally located in Mardin. In addition to the only municipality of Ömerli, the district also includes 46 villages and 2 hamlets. Geographically, Ömerli is part of the Tur Abdin Mountains .

When the place Ömerli was founded is unclear. The oldest traces come from Assyrian times. In 1925 the village of Maserti became the administrative seat of a Bucak . Until 1953, Ömerli was part of the Savur district as Bucak . After that it was split off and became independent. Throughout history, many Syrian-Aramaic- speaking Christians ( Süryani ) lived in Ömerli, including Syriac Orthodox , Chaldean Catholic and Nestorians who are said to have converted to Islam in the 14th century. Today the city has a mixed Arab-Kurdish population.

The current name Ömerli is derived from the name of the Mhallami tribe Ömeryan.
