Leyla Güven (born May 6, 1964 in Yapalı Cihanbeyli in Turkey) is a Kurdish politician in Turkey . In 2018/2019 she carried out a hunger strike against Abdullah Öcalan's solitary confinement, which resulted in numerous other actions.

Life

Leyla Güven was born in 1964 in Yapalı Village, Cihanbeyli County , Konya, the youngest child of a family of nine. Her parents, Hacı and Cevriye Güven, are Central Anatolian Kurds . According to the daughter, Güven attended school until he finished primary school or, according to other information, until middle school . Traditionally , Güven was married at the age of 16 or 17 . Güven lived with her husband in Germany from around 1980 to 1985 and had the surname Temizkan. She had a son and a daughter, divorced between the ages of 30 and 40, returned to Konya, and resumed her maiden name. There she had to struggle with considerable social pressure to remarry or at least to live with her family.

politics

Güven became politically active from 1994 onwards. She was a board member of the Kurdish HADEP in Konya and chairwoman of the local women's association. Later she was a member of the party council and chairwoman of the central women's association of DEHAP and, after moving to Adana, headed the women's department there. In the local elections in Turkey in 2004 she was mayor Küçük Dikilis , a suburb of Adana .

In the local elections in Turkey in 2009 , Güven was elected mayor of Viranşehir for the Democracy Toplum Partisi .

In December 2004 Güven was arrested during the so-called KCK operation, which was directed against the civilian structures of the PKK , and was then taken into custody in Diyarbakır. The trial opened in Diyarbakır's 2nd Major Criminal Chamber in October 2010. In 2014 Güven was released from prison. The final judgment was issued in March 2017 and read six years and three months imprisonment for membership in the PKK. Güven no longer had to be in custody, however, as her sentence had been settled. In the parliamentary elections in Turkey in June 2015 she was elected as MP for Şanlıurfa. In the new elections in November 2015 , Leyla Güven was re-elected for Şanlıurfa, but not elected. In 2016 Güven visited the Zilan Festival in Dortmund. This festival is held annually in memory of the suicide bomber Zilan . According to a report by the PKK press, Güven said:

“You have been celebrating this festival here for twelve years. Despite all the difficulties, you are still on your feet. You are committed; because Zilan is just like the Kurdish people's leader said, a manifesto, a departure, a signpost. For this reason you don't forget them. "

Güven was arrested again in January 2018. The reason for this was critical remarks about Operation Olive Branch . Pretrial detention was imposed a few days later. The prosecutor's dossier shows that the prosecution is based on the fact that the NGO Demokratie Toplum Kongresi, on whose behalf Güven made the statements and of which she is co-chair, was founded on the instructions of Abdullah Öcalan. In the parliamentary elections in Turkey in 2018 , Güven won a mandate in the Turkish parliament for a constituency in Hakkari . A court ordered her release a few days after the election. An objection by the public prosecutor's office against this decision was granted, so that Güven had to remain in custody despite the mandate. According to media reports, the police ransacked her home in Diyarbakır in October 2018. From November 7, 2018, Güven started an indefinite hunger strike against Abdullah Öcalan's solitary confinement . Her mother passed away in January 2018. Güven had already been in prison when her father died in 2011. In January 2019, Güven was still on a hunger strike. Their action sparked a wave of solidarity actions in Europe and Turkey and hunger strikes in Strasbourg and in Turkish prisons.

On January 25, 2019, a criminal court ordered the release of Leyla Güven due to her poor health, subject to conditions, including a travel ban. Another hearing has been scheduled for May 29, 2019.
