The Liberal Synagogue in Darmstadt , a large city in the south of Hesse (Germany), was built between 1873 and 1876. The synagogue , which was inaugurated on February 23, 1876, was located at Friedrichstrasse 2 in the newly created Johannesviertel .

architecture

The synagogue was built according to plans by the city architect Eduard Wilhelm Köhler (1822–1882). The construction work was under the direction of his assistant Stephan Braden, who succeeded him as town builder in 1880. The neo-Romanesque building with borrowings from oriental architecture was a representative and imposing sacred building. The four domed corner towers were visible from afar. The outer surfaces were clad with red sandstones . The roofs of the ship were covered with slate and the corner towers with zinc.

The interior was divided into three naves by two rows of columns, which supported the galleries on arches. The Almemor was on the east wall of the synagogue. This was also an expression and a distinguishing feature of liberal Judaism . There was also the rabbi's lectern with the Torah . The organ underlines the liberal orientation of the Jewish community. The instrument would be unthinkable in an Orthodox community.

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was arson attacked by SA men.

Place of remembrance Liberal Synagogue

In October 2003 the remains of the Liberal Synagogue were discovered during excavation work for a new building in the municipal hospital . On April 13, 2004, the City of Darmstadt's magistrate decided to erect a memorial at the site and to integrate it into the concept of the planned new building. The found foundations (they correspond to about one sixth of the original floor space of the synagogue) were exposed, cleaned and preserved. A pillar-free fair-faced concrete shell by the architect Jörg Friedrich surrounds the 15 by 15 meter large memorial, which can be accessed via walkways and bridges suspended from the ceiling. The finds are explained through the artistic and didactic concept of Ritula Fränkel and Nicolas Morris. On November 9, 2009, the Liberal Synagogue Memorial was opened.
