Liebhartstal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Liebhartstal is a valley in the area of the Gallitzinberg in Vienna and the headwaters of the Ottakringer Bach . The name is likely to go back to the 14th century (at that time "Liebhartsgraben").

Until after the turn of the 20th century, it was a popular destination for the Viennese with numerous inns and wine taverns. The restaurant of the Matauschek family, which played an important role in the history of the Wienerlied, was particularly well known .

Many mother-of-pearl turners worked in the area; When it was built, the substructure of Gallitzinstrasse consisted partly of mother-of-pearl waste, which is why it was even jokingly referred to as “Mother-of-Pearl”.

The last mayor of Ottakring, Anton Zagorski (1838–1902; mayor 1881–1891) built a representative villa in 1886 in Liebhartstal (Gallitzinstrasse 90 / Gerunggasse 1).

Today the Liebhartstal is a quiet residential area on the edge of the Vienna Woods . The Villa Novak, commonly known as "Ganserlburg", built in 1886 above the head of the valley, is under monument protection ( list entry ). The Villa Zagorski was demolished a few decades ago and there are now condominiums in its place.

On the north side above the Liebhartstal lies Wilhelminenberg Castle .

The Liebhartstal is the central plot of Arthur Schnitzler's dream novel .
