At the Asian Championships in April 1962, Malaysia was a size too big for the Indonesians in the final of the tournament for men's teams, Indonesia lost 5-0. In the previous semifinals, Kiang had contributed to advancing over Thailand with a 15:12 and 18:13 victory in a 33-minute match against Somsook Boonyasukhanonda . However, he lost his first game to Sangob Rattanusorn with 5:15 and 8:15. In the individual competition of the Asian Championships , Liem Tjeng Kiang and Tjap Han Tiong failed again in the semifinals against a Malaysian opponent. They were clearly defeated by Teh Kew San and Lim Say Hup after only 19 minutes in two sets with 5:15 and 4:14 and finished third.
