Lightstorm Entertainment, Inc. is an American film production company . The company also owns the music label Lightstorm Music . The majority of films produced by the company are 20th Century Fox awarded .
history
The company was founded in 1990 by James Cameron and Larry Kasanoff in Burbank , California . The studio's first film production was Terminator 2 - Reckoning Day .
In April 1992, the studio signed a production contract with 20th Century Fox and four other international partners for a total of 500 million US dollars. Kasanoff left Lightstorm in June 1993 after differences with Cameron about the future direction of the company. He was succeeded by Rae Sanchini .
In December 1995, an exclusive first-look deal with 20th Century Fox was announced. In April 2000, Jon Landau merged his production company Blue Horizon with Lightstorm Entertainment and took on the role of COO. A year later, the first-look deal with Fox was extended for another five years
In 1997 the studio had a huge hit with Cameron's film Titanic , which grossed over $ 1.8 billion worldwide and won 11 Academy Awards . In 2009, Cameron and Lightstorm were able to surpass the result with the science fiction film Avatar - Departure for Pandora , which grossed over 2.78 billion US dollars worldwide, making it the most successful film worldwide by grossing in 2017 .
After that, Lightstorm Entertainment focused on the production of the sequels Avatar 2 to Avatar 5 as well as the film adaptation of the manga Battle Angel Alita .
