action

Battle Angel Alita

Cosplayer disguised as Alita.

The mechanic Ido builds a new artificial organism with other scrap parts from a partially scrapped head of a female cyborg . He calls her Alita. With no memory of her previous life, she assists Ido in Schrottstadt . One day she finds out that she has previously unimagined skills in combat . She decides to become a bounty hunter , a so-called "Hunter Warrior". Due to heavy fights, she receives a new, almost invincible body from Ido , which he calls Berserker and which supposedly comes from space . With her martial arts and the abilities of her body, she also hunts down criminals who other bounty hunters shy away from.

In volume two, Alita falls in love with Yugo , whom an organ dealer has promised to take him to the sky city “Zalem” for a certain amount of money. When Yugo appears on the wanted list, Alita has to choose between her job and love. She dares to do the balancing act by saving his head and thus the brain and delivering the boy's body as a trophy and thus as proof of his death. Ido gives him a machine body, but then Yugo realizes that he would only make it to the sky city in parts and dies from it.

Disaffected , Alita wants to start a new life in volume three and begins with Motorball , a kind of combination between inline skate racing and American football for life and death. She achieves promotion to the second highest racing class in a very short time. Then she meets Jashugan , the longtime and indomitable master of the highest class. She fights for the right to compete directly against him, but still needs a team of four other players.

In volume four she puts this team together as part of a motorball race and finally competes against Jashugan. The other four players are kicked out of the game by Jashugan in the first few meters, so that it comes straight to a showdown between him and Alita. In the course of this struggle, she remembers her prehistory, which must have taken place on Mars .

In volume five she withdraws from the sport of motorball and starts singing in the bar that serves as a meeting place for the bounty hunters and wants to lead a simple life. Then Zapan reappears - a former bounty hunter colleague whom she played in volume two. In the meantime, however, Zapan has been equipped with Alita's berserker body by the “ karma researcher” Desty Nova , which she had stored during her motorball career, but which was stolen. Equipped with a serum that destroys the berserker body, it comes to the showdown in scrap town.

In volume six Alita awakens in Zalem and decides equipped with a new, even better body and many high-tech - gadgets to act as a super-agent for Zalem. Outside of Junk City , a guerrilla war is waging with Bar Jack , who are trying to disrupt the supply routes to Zalem. During the escort of a nuclear-powered train she meets Foggier Four and Jörg , who hired themselves as mercenaries to guard the train. During a fight with part of the Bar Jack, Alita and Foggier Four successfully take action against the overpowering troops. Foggier becomes her new love.

In volume seven she becomes friends with Lou , her new contact person in Zalem. She is assigned to find the leader of the bar Jack, Den . On the way there she meets Kaos , who has "psychometric skills". This means that he can learn everything about their past by simply touching objects. Kaos “frees” Alita from her dependency on Zalem and wants to marry her, when the bar Jack appears. Alita faces Den, but spares him at the crucial moment. Eventually, it turns out Den is Kaos' alter ego .

Alita served as a prototype for a Cyborg type that Zalem has now sent out in twelve versions. This is found in volume eight. Since Alita has proven to be too stubborn, "AR-2" or two for short was called to try to eliminate the original. Together with Lou, who helps her from the Tuned headquarters, she can save herself - but Lou is suspended. Alita goes on a search for Desty Nova and finds him in a rock fortress. In the meantime, the Bar Jack launched a frontal attack on Zalem, but are crushed by Alita's replica "AR-10".

In volume nine, Desty Nova opens up the true nature of its population with a live broadcast to all of Zalem. By opening his own skull, he proves that all the brains of the adult residents of Zalem are removed as part of an initiation rite and replaced by a high-performance chip . This made it possible for the authorities to control all citizens. Unruly people like Desty Nova or Ido were banished from Zalem. Desty Nova manages to kill Alita with explosives . In a near-death vision , Alita finally realizes her true past and her origins on Mars. Desty Nova is pardoned and reinstated by Zalem. He takes parts of Alita's brain with him and reconstructs them in his laboratory. Together with Lou and Desty Nova she sets out to reach Zalem's central computer , which no one has ever reached, and there she recognizes the connections between all previous adventures.

Battle Angel Alita: Last Order

This manga series is not a seamless sequel to Battle Angel Alita , but rather an alternate ending to the story. This series begins where Desty Nova returns to Zalem with parts of Alita's brain. In the course of the various stories Alita learns more and more about her past and the special techniques of "armor art", which she is slowly rediscovering. A crucial difference to the previous series is the change from the surface of the earth with its barbaric, dirty culture to the largely standardized and highly developed, but also often grotesque universe.

Alita wakes up in the cloud city of Zalem, brought back to life by the scientist Desty Nova . A civil war is raging in the city between the residents and the machines of the MIB, who are trying to restore order by killing anyone who knows the secret of the MIB, as Desty Nova revealed the secret of the brain chips to the citizens of Zalem. Alita joins a group of children there who have to defend themselves against their own parents. Then she meets six , eleven and twelve , 3 of her replicas from the "Tuned series" that accompany Desty Nova. When she defeats six, the three of them will be friendly towards her in the future.

In the following volume, after a bitter fight against a giant robot, peace returns to Zalem. Alita learns of the fate of her friend Lou and it is reported how Kaos "fights" for the plan to unite Junk City and Zalem.

In volume three, Alita and Nova ride the Tuned on the orbital lift from Zalem up to Jeru , the space city. There they meet Aga Mbadi , who is only interested in Desty Nova's brain chip and lets everyone else throw them back to earth. Fortunately, Alita and her companions are saved by Pingu Uh , who lives hidden in the robot realm of Jeru. Here she learns a lot about the political situation in the solar system and about the Zenit Of Things tournament (ZOTT), which would give her access to Jeru. Pingu and Alita then hide in the spacecraft of the Martian faction and get to Leviathan 1, a huge colony ship that functions as a leisure battlefield.

After a traumatic experience with a child, she immediately feels obliged to them and goes on this battlefield together with Zazie . Together they clear this battlefield - even overcome the team of space karate under the direction of the award-winning cyborg karateka Toji - and register for the ZOTT.

In the fifth volume, Alita and Tuned fight in the ZOTT and confidently win the preliminary round. Alita experiences a conflict of conscience when she meets the space children's home team Guntroll, which is led by the vampire Caella Sanguise, and she does not want to play against them. Only when the rest of her team is defeated does Alita join the fight and bring about the turning point.

In volume six, Alita wins against the leader of the Guntroll team, the vampire Caella Sanguise, who once stopped Alita on her last mission as a yoko and thus sealed her fate. At the time of the defeat staged by her, Caella hands Alita a key that is useful for the successful continuation of Alitas' mission. While the six, eleven and twelve compete in the next round, Alita tries to penetrate into the center of the orbital station. She is attacked by another tank artist.

In the seventh volume, Alita fights against Zeikrow von Rabe, also known as the inhuman Zeik, higher warrior of the Mauser style and master of the chamber group of armored art. Further details about their role in recent years and the background to the destruction of Grüntal are revealed. In addition, the fight against the space circus that began in Volume 6 continues and Sechs re-enters the stage. The volume ends with the victory of the Space Angels against the psychologically gifted members of the space cult .

In the eighth volume, Alita and Pingu hack into Melchizedek and find a memory of the vampire Caella, who from now on takes on a leading role. In this memory you can see a part of her life shortly after the comet impact on earth. This episode extends over 50 years and describes the life of the vampires and humans, who were bitter enemies at that time, as well as the post-apocalyptic epoch in which the world was reorganized, shaped by the new ice age (one learns among other things also that Japan suffered the greatest damage as the comet hit Tokyo directly).

In the ninth volume, Caella defeats her former fiancé Byron and experiences the end of the "Long Winter". She wakes up a few years later from a coma-like state with new strength and a regenerated body. In addition, it is described how Caella receives the program "Fata Morgana", which gives admin rights in the Melchizedek system and should (did?) Lead to its destruction.

In the tenth volume, the earth makes contact with the citizens of Zalem, which now also includes a Nova clone. Six almost single-handedly defeated the opponents in the ZOTT and thus secures the Space Angels a place in the semi-finals. Alita receives the “Fata Morgana” program from a virtual Caella and thus the power over the fate of humanity. After Alita has left virtual reality, Pingu and Mbadi fight, which Pingu only barely survives. In the ensuing turmoil in the real world, Six encounters an opponent who represents a challenge for him, after having easily defeated all opponents in the ZOTT. When Alita now wants to free Lou's brain from the incubator, she meets Nova, who has two brain chips and causes her to swap the brain in the P-Box for Lou, but this brain is her own since she woke up in Zalem there is also a brain chip in her head. Beaten by the shock and hack of this more vicious nova, she plunges into the bowels of Zalem's innards.

In the eleventh volume, Toji, master of superelectromagnetism karate, is alone in the quarter-finals of the space karate alliance. His opponent is Anomaly, a being made of nanomachine cells, which Super-Nova describes as "an evil caricature of humans". Toji seems to succumb, which leads Zekka, karate master of the mukashindi second style, to intervene in the fight; Toji demands a demonstration of Zekka's fighting technique instead of simply giving him advice. Six starts the semi-final fight in the A block, also alone. His opponent is Warman 609 from Team Jupiter. Six uses the experience he gained in the ZOTT tournament to destroy the first form of Warman. In the second form, he receives help from a battle-hardened friend who has suddenly signed up as the fifth team member. Together they soon face the last, but almost invincible form of Warman, Tunguska, a weapon of war - which also endangers the lives of the audience. In these moments, Alita's comeback is on the way.

In the twelfth volume, Alita again actively intervenes in the action. Since she was able to blast Tunguska through the nanomachine cells and thus virtually celebrates her rebirth, she is now stronger than ever. Supernova calls her body the Imaginos 2.0. Trinidad and Supernova then cancel the tournament and attack Alita, Sechs and Zazie. But Alita is now immune to Trinidad's hacking and can crush his hand and hit him if she wants. Due to pressure from Alita, Zekka and the newly emerging Venus team, the tournament will continue. But the price is no longer the sovereignty of the state, but rather the rule over Zalem and the scrap town, the destruction of which by the New Order Mbadi is already being planned. The Venus team still has some genetic surprises in store for Zekka. While the arena is being rebuilt, karate fighters from all corners of the solar system are waging a true karate war to find out who the fighters will be who will represent Toji and Zekka in the semifinals. A fighter emerges from the crowd and it boils down to the greatest tournament of all time.

The thirteenth volume describes the fight between the Venus team and the now four karate fighters, since Taraba and the perverted Rakkan were added to the team, the latter through Zekka, who says that morality cannot be afforded at the moment. It is shown how a genetically modified battle beast named Igrec is raised on Venus. So that she is compliant, an attractive android, Olympe, is used to look after her, but Igrec destroys her in an attack of hunger. At the end of this flashback, the fight between the Venus team and the karate fighters begins. The Venus team relies on genetically engineered animals such as Bigorne and Chicheface as well as Igrec, who is now called Homme de feu and who is promised the freedom of the restored Olympus as a reward for participating, and Pissarrocrie De Vouivre as the creator of the beasts. Two beasts and a karate fighter die in the furious fight. Toji is thrown into space by a violent attack by the mutating Igrecs, despite shields being blocked off. Olympe betrays Pissarrocrie De Vouivre because of his cruelty towards Igrec and attacks him from behind, but he barely survives. Olympe flees to Igrec, but is shot by Pissarocrie, now in his true form as a deformed dwarf creature. Igrec then breaks off the fight, but his body continues to mutate and permeate the entire battlefield. Zekka ends the mutation with an attack that brings him final victory.

In the fourteenth volume, Zazie, who previously collapsed, tells how her condition came about. During a joint military operation by the New Order, Venus, Jupiter and the parliamentary Martian faction to liberate the Olympus spaceport on Mars, Zazie was occupied by a tank fighter known as Ms. X, which will lead to this after a month due to adding soliton waves that her head explodes. Alita can save Zazie, however, but there was also a coded message hidden in the shed for her: "I'm waiting for you!" Use of the sword of Damocles, a scalar wave weapon similar to Abbadon, but much more powerful, warns. On Earth in Scrap Town, Vektor and Chaos are now working on a “democratization”. In Zalem, too, one learns about the trade between Alita, the karate fighters and Aga Mbadi, which concerns the future of the earth's inhabitants.

In the fifteenth volume: The Last Fight of ZOTT, the space karate fighters against the Space Angels begins. Alita fights against Toji, Zazie against Rakkan and Sechs against Zekka. In the course of the fight one learns more about the prehistory of Rakkan, who was a respected karate teacher and was able to intercept projectiles himself, but was shot at by his son, who was instigated by other children, and suffered brain damage that turned him into a criminal . Rakkan dies fighting Zazie after Zazie can overcome his uranium fingertips with an osmium bullet. In the fight against Zekka it looks as if Six can win, but the karate fighter damaged Six's chest with targeted blows and unnoticed by him, whereupon it explodes, which does not mean the end, however, as the small synchronized unit survives . Due to the intervention of the Jupiterans, Alita loses against Toji, but she can materialize again on the battlefield and bring Toji down. Just as she is about to kill him, a hand rises from Toji's body and stops her blade; it is Donfa who was hiding in Toji. Since he now has the only worthy opponent in front of him, Zekka challenges Donfa to fight. Donfa succeeds in throwing Zekka onto the moon with a single blow, defeating the karate fighters and the Space Angels winning the ZOTT. Aga Mbadi refuses to accept this and orders the use of the sword of Damocles, but Pingu has managed to eliminate Unanimous, and chairman Yanik opposes Mbadi and is killed by him as a result. By creating a black hole, Donfa can just stop the scalar wave weapon and now meets Mbadi, from whom he snatches the three implanted brain chips. The citizens of Jeru, no longer under Mbadi's control, have learned of his crime and are pursuing him; in order to escape, he repels the onion frame, which allows tremendous forces to act that shake the orbital ring together with Zalem and the city couple Zig and Gurat. The onion frame is evacuated, and Mbadi meets Caerulea Sanguis there, who kills him and sends him into space, but now the out of control onion frame threatens to plunge onto the lunar colony.

In a flashback it is shown that Alita meets the artificial intelligence of Jupiter "Zeus" and Arthur meets the AI of Jeru before her rematerialization in the arena. Both are at first at odds, but decide to reconstruct Alita's body with its enormous possibilities, and she is first tasked as her agent to save the lunar colony, but first she has to decide in which form she will use her two brains, biologically and artificial, would like to continue to exist. The meanwhile evacuated Onionframe is finally changed by Alita in such a way that it evades the moon by means of wing-like formations and disappears into space.

On the surface of the earth you can see that Ido and Figure Four have meanwhile arrived in Scrap Town; now their story is told up to this point. Figure meets one of the AR units that Six (then still in the female AR body) is chasing and tries to protect her because he thinks she is Alita. Six can kill the AR unit, but finally also overcomes Figure, who loses an arm in the process and can only save himself by jumping into a nearby river. Later he is rescued by Ido and Kayna and equipped with a new, cybernetic arm.

The appearance of a cyborg doctor who takes Ido to be the messianically revered Nova eventually leads to massive problems, since Nova's victims and enemies now gather to take revenge. The thread soldiers, who fanatically believe in Nova as their savior, fight against the attackers, Ido and Figure escape, Kanya meets one of Nova's victims, to whom she is subject in battle; The fighting causes a meltdown in the factory farm's reactor and a huge explosion that destroys it.

Ido and Figure are arrested by the authorities at the nearest factory farm, and since they want to be sure that Ido is not Desty Nova and yet escapes, they are sentenced to death by shooting. However, you can escape with the help of all those whom Ido once helped. Arrived in junk town, they see the destruction caused by the detachment of the Onionframe, and meet Koyomi, who can just save Figure from a fatal fall. Together with Kaos, two cyborgs and two technicians they go to Zalem, but there one of Nova's incarnations has already seized power and is now challenging his son Kaos to a game of life and death, which is one of the cyborgs at the beginning the life costs and in further consequence Ido. Kaos decides to use a joker who saves himself to at least be able to kill Nova even if everyone else dies. At that moment, Ido appears and overwhelms Nova. Ido's death was only staged with the help of the Deception Novas, Nova clones with a lower intellect, which Nova uses for experiments and distraction. Since his recovery would automatically start again after Nova's death, he is stunned and frozen, but first he gives Ido a few pills with his deleted memories. Nola, Pam Mahan and their margin were saved by Nova, dissolved in biomass and now reconstructed, like the rest of the residents of Zalem, but for the time being the girls are not told that they were "killed".

Ido, Figure, Kaos, Koyomi, Marge and the cyborgs arrive in Jeru, where the robots have taken power under their new King Hekaton. Hekaton is Deckman 100, who, together with Elf and Twelve, ousted Lambda Nam Nam. Figure and Koyomi are saved by Rem Rei, who, together with her uncle, Sechs' cyborg technician, and Sechs himself, who is now on the move in his small body, tackles the overthrow of the king. After a short fight in which eleven and twelve are defeated by six, the reason for Deckman-100's actions becomes apparent: After the fall of Mbadi, the existence of the Incubator became known to the highest authorities in the Earth Orbital Federation, and they wanted to join him for political reasons discard, even Lambda Nam Nam agreed to it, because he wanted to avoid a confrontation with the people, which is why he was attacked with eleven and twelve by the panicked Deckman-100, who had to save Alita's brain. Later you see Figure, who is waiting in front of a bio printer with Lou, who has been reconstructed as a complete human being, in order to finally embrace the "expression" Alita herself, but now with a biological body. The brain chip Alita has now arrived on Mars.

Battle Angel Alita: Mars Chronicle

After Gerda rescues Yoko and Erika from death , as shown in Last Order , the two girls are taken to a small town, Mamiana, and treated by a doctor. The doctor realizes Yoko's current inability to properly operate her cyborg body and equips her with a remote control for her legs.

After both of them are housed in an orphanage, Yoko is mistreated for her mechanical body by Ninon Silber, who comes from the royal family of Mars. Ninon tries to play Erica against Yoko, but Erica resists and is beaten up by the other girls. Meanwhile, three bounty hunters have started the search for Yoko.

Ninon has set up her secret palace in a pumping station and is now showing it to Yoko and Erica. A picture book, which she reads to Yoko, illuminates the prehistory of Mars. While the girls are playing in their hiding place, the village is attacked by so-called "locusts", infantry with rocket backpacks, and the orphanage is destroyed. The villagers manage to defeat the locusts, but these were only scouts for the main force, which is now rolling towards the village with numerous units, including a huge armored vehicle with the same train. As the smallest of the girls, Yoko is sent through a shaft to open the door to the rear of the station, which is blocked by the water pressure, for the others, and to allow them to escape. Yoko loses her remote control, but is ultimately successful. But one of the masked and armored soldiers penetrates the hiding place and two of the girls die before he is killed by opening a lock. Once at the exit, the girls have to discover that the stairs no longer exist. Ninon believes that the attackers are the Parrot Army Corps, which after a rebellion was loyal to her father. She tries to stop the attackers by disclosing her identity, but is shot. After the massacre, the three bounty hunters arrive, but can only watch the corpses being removed by the real Parrot Corps; the attackers were the renegade winds corps. Through a news broadcast, the bounty hunters learn that Erica and Yoko survived. The girls are now back with the doctor who initially treated them, and he has to recognize that the two have suppressed everything that has happened in Mamiana and assume that this is the first time they have met him. One tries to reach a safe area with the caravan of the doctor, but it comes to a so-called "sky break". In the process, the canopy, supported by huge columns, which holds the atmosphere of Mars, tears. There are catastrophic drops in temperature and a sudden drop in pressure, which the three protagonists only survive by staying in the pressure-controlled car. After a night in uncertainty, everyone is rescued by a gardener from the Mars Baldachin Association (MBV), which is the organization responsible for building and maintaining the canopy and the columns. Mui, the gardener then also explains that the sky breaking was not caused by a natural event such as a meteorite, but was used by one of the army at war as a scorched earth tactic. The reason for the rescue of the three is also revealed: The erection of a new pillar requires a human sacrifice, which must serve as the basis for their growth. The doctor is out of the question because of his age, Yoko is also out because of her machine body, only Erika is suitable. Before Mui can convert Erika and Yoko, who also want to stay together in death, a priestess of the MBV reports and explains that the girls are to be let go unharmed because of an oracle.

The next chapter takes place again in the present, in the year 594 of the Sputnik era, Alita / Yoko is back on Mars and lays flowers at the monument of Mamiana. Erika appears, she explains that the monument was erected by her in order to find Alita, who had been on Venus for the past three years, and from there the berserker cannon Danko, an artificial being based on berserker cells in the form of a firearm, which wraps around her arm. Erik was indeed Mrs. X, who fought for the new Third Reich and sent a message to Alita in Zazie's body.

Change of scene to the spaceship Guntroll of the Stellar Nursery Society, Caerulea Sanguis consults with Qu Tsang and discusses the attack on their base and its destruction, which forced the SNS to participate in the ZOTT. Caerullea found out that Aga Mbadi had nothing to do with it, but someone who only describes himself as "existence" and stays in the background. The fight with the New Third Reich is also discussed, now six is fighting on the side of the SNS on the side of Queen Limeila, who has already conquered 80% of the canopy-covered area of Mars.

On Mars there was a fight between Alita and Erika, in which Danko intervenes by firing at Erika, who can deflect the shot using a tank art technique. Erika explains to Alita that she threatened Mole 208 years ago before the operation. She would kill Erika when she saw her again. On the Guntroll, Caerulea Sanguis now declares that the leader of the New Third Reich, Klaus Kirwitzer, was found dead. An autopsy revealed that he was a necroso soldier, a dead man whose memories and skills have been preserved, but who is remote controlled. And, according to Alita, who confronts her with this terrible truth, Erika is also supposed to be a necroso, because Alita killed Erika 200 years ago. Erika is horrified and rejects this revelation, but loses a foot in the further fight. Before they can attack Alita again, the Einherjer appear in a flying vehicle. The Einherjer, the warriors of existence, are Alita's former comrades-in-arms, all Necrosoldiers, from whom she now learns that she was supposed to die at Caerullea Sanguis' hand three years ago to join them. Erika is ordered to retreat by her leader Gregt, and after the escape of the Einherjer, which is made possible by a child with a bomb, whose rescue makes Alita impossible to pursue, the soldiers of Queen Limeila appear. Alita and Danko are arrested on the attempt to murder Limeila, an accusation thrown at them by Zazie, the unit's commander.

Alita is now a prisoner of the parliamentary Martian faction, she is interrogated and confronted with the assassination attempt she allegedly committed on Queen Limeila, Caerulea Sanguis appears unexpectedly and explains that the parliamentary Martian faction was probably infiltrated by a number of necroso soldiers, and a priestess of the MBV appears, it is Mui, who now demands Alita's release and vouches for her. Queen Limeila, who has now been physically restored, gives her consent, but Alita is given a collar with a transmitter before her release so that she can always be found.

In the Einherjer base, Erika von Gregt asks to know the truth, whether each of them is a necro soldier. Gregt confirms this and asks the shocked Erika whether this makes a difference because her "dreams" have stayed the same. Alita, who is now staying with Mui, wants to save Erika and one sets out to consult a competent doctor recommended by Mui, who is none other than Super Nova, who now also employs Zeikrov as a servant. Nova doesn't know what a necroso soldier is but wants to try to act according to Alitas, Muis and Zeikrov's wish and to remove the control mechanism from the brain and to make Erika a living being again.

Another flashback shows how Yoko is reunited with her mother, both belong to an important family on Mars, while the doctor and Erika move on, it turns out that Erika herself was responsible for the death of her cruel and violent parents. Erika has promised criminals rich booty if they kill their father and mother, whom Erika has gouged out an eye. The booty turns out to be a useless edition of the book "[Vom Kriege]" by Karl von Clausewitz for the two crooks. At the same time the EDOM conference of the big eighteen takes place every three years, a meeting of the Mars government which advises on the use of an orbital mirror, said mirror is used to distribute the weak sunlight. The negotiations are brought to an end by force, a man covered in grotesque masks appears and the bodyguards of those present die from poison that was introduced into their cyborg bodies long beforehand. The masked man, who reveals himself as a Baron Muster, demands that the Cydonia area be exempt from the sprinkling and fall victim to the cold. The representative of this region, Porwit protests and dies, to the horror of the rest of those present, when the stranger touches her with his walking stick and her body becomes rock-hard and splintered like crystal. Muster proclaims that he can harden the proteins in living bodies, and that everyone in the room already has the substance in their body, and the catalyst is on their stick. Cornered, the Big Eighteen Patterns decide to comply, but ask for secrecy. Some distance away, the three bounty hunters, whose employer was Porwit, have now captured Erika and the doctor and are now demanding Yoko when Muster interferes. With his glider he seizes Erika and asks her for her father's book, which she emphatically denies. The already struck glider finally goes to the ground in the desert, where both Erika and Muster fall into an old spaceship wreck. In the dangerous situation for both of them, it is decided to enter into a ceasefire. Muster instructs Erika how to restart the power supply, but has a seizure and has to remove his mask and clothing to treat his illness. After Muster clears his upper body, Erika can see the reason for the masquerade; Muster suffers from the "mask tumor", a growth of faces and heads on his own face and back, which slowly but surely deprive him of oxygen and energy, and which he tries to conquer with cancer cells. Finally, Muster explains why he needs the book, because this is one of two parts left by the last, honest one of the nine kings of Mars, as a clue to a treasure which Muster wants to use for his rescue and his revenge on his enemies. The other part of the riddle is the pattern of a walking stick (originally referred to as a "gold stick") which Erika, unintentionally, puts in a circuit whereupon it begins to twist and write a message in the sand. Muster throws a camera to Erika and asks her to take a picture, but she blurs the text, which allows Muster to guarantee their safety for their collaboration. Erika, however, is not happy with it, the murder of her parents, which she reveals patterns, weighs too heavily on her. After all, Muster explains that Erika can also be happy on the crime side and decides to take her on as an "apprentice". Finally, Erika comes along to Muster's secret fortress, a mobile building that moves through a canyon landscape with milling and stilts so that it cannot be located. Annoyed by her combat trainer Zoe, Erika finally decides to bring the food to a prisoner, it is a friendly young man who, as it turns out, is looking for his missing girlfriend. Muster actually kidnapped the person he was looking for and gave the prisoner, Damjan, a look at his collection of statues, including the man's girlfriend, which crystallized and was pierced by a sword. Erika is appalled by Muster's cruelty and advises Damjan, who has been gradually poisoned since the beginning of his capture and is now on the verge of death, to accept an antidote offered by Muster. Muster lets Damjan live as Erika's "pet" as he behaves. In the evening in Erika's room, Damjan is dismayed by himself and his fear. Erika asks him to hold out in order to get revenge.

Erika finally learns from Muster that he is up to something with Yoko that could harm his enemies, but he keeps the details a secret and says he will reveal them at the right time. When Erika brings Professor Chinmoy, one of the scientists who work for samples, food, she lets him explain to her how “Krista Morten”, the substance that killed Porwit, works. It is the powder of a Martian rock, non-toxic, tasteless and odorless, and it is eliminated from the body after a week, but when the particles are exposed to a certain ultrasound frequency they vibrate and the surrounding proteins crystallize irreversibly. Without Chinmoy noticing, Erika mixed the Krista Morten into his food and he died and splintered when she started up an ultrasound source which he gave her for demonstration purposes.

Erika pretends to be an accident and when he learns about it he is rather amused because he is now sure to raise an equal villain with Erika. During a trip to one of Muster's legal ventures, a brick factory, Erika and Damjan saw how bricks were made from the corpses of the victims of the Skybreak through a treatment with Krista Morten, which gave her the term "merciless" and her inexorable world, the Mars, makes it understandable. In the meantime, Yoko is rudely torn away from her mother and presented by Lord Marquis, Muster's ally and the uncle of the ruler of Cydonia, Lady Kagura. Lady Kagura is said to abdicate in favor of Yokos because she suffers from an incurable and disfiguring disease, which is probably also a mask tumor. However, Lady Kagura tries to grab Yoko, which fails, but causes Marquis to pull away. Finally, the Marquis brings the unfortunate Yoko into a huge hall, he wants to show her her fate as the future ruler of Cydonia and what power she will inherit, the patron god of Cydonia, the ethnarch "Odeon Bach".

After the message that the gold stick draws in the sand has been cracked with Erika's help, Muster, his helpers, like Damjan and Erika, set off in a glider to the specified coordinates in the Martian north pole region, and finally get through the last code fragments which are deciphered by Erika's edition of “Vom Kriege”, the sentence “WHERE THE EAGLE PICKS ON THE EYEBALL OF THE SKELETON OFFER THE DANCING STICK” (where the word skeleton is translated as skull). After dropping a vehicle and digging for a long time, there is a strong sandstorm that causes the glider to crash. You wait on the spot until the storm is over after days, and erika again gives the clue to solve the riddle, because she asks whether the old Martian kings used the same maps as the people of today, and the coordinates really differ a lot from. At the destination you will find a processed stone structure which at the right time casts an eagle-shaped shadow, which knows a hole in the rock, where you finally use the gold stick. After the stick is inserted, an entrance portal rises from the ground. After Muster has shot his cryptologist, the labyrinth that leads to the secret is tried to crack with the Tremaux algorithm , and Muster, Erica, Zoe and Damjan find the center after several hours. Erica's edition of “Vom Kriege” is used as a password and a transparent CD is given out. At this moment Damjan overwhelms Zoe and threatens Muster and Erica with his weapon, whom he now regards with contempt. It turns out that he was not looking for his girlfriend, but is acting on behalf of one of the Big Eighteen, and is supposed to take revenge on Muster for his threats during the EDOM conference. Damjan explains that he poisoned the water supply for the spacesuits of Muster and the others with Krista Mortem, and that he got himself the antidote that is supposed to save him from Muster's admixtures of poison, which he ingests immediately. But Muster saw through Damjan in time, and when Damjan uses a ballpoint pen with an ultrasound source and wonders why it is not having any effect on Muster and Erica, Muster reveals that the Krista Mortem that Damjan used against him were only ineffective tablets, the alleged antidote on the other hand was Krista Mortem. At that moment, the effect of the crystal is already evident and Damjan hardens and breaks, Muster breaks out in laughter and advises Erica to learn from Damjan's fate.

Muster is angry with Zoe but then turns his attention to the CD, the story now concentrating on events 13 years ago.

Excavations are taking place near the so-called Mars face, the future Baron Muster, Itaru Sonan, is the son of the head of the excavation. Itaru is talking to his friend Johan Wald, Erica's future father, when his sister Norin calls him to work. Princess Kagura Dornburg and her chamberlain Policella Porwit arrive to be present when a box is opened. Itaru is a secret admirer of the princess, but keeps it a secret. The princess shows those present the treasure of the Dornburg house, the second volume of a special edition of Clausewitz's "Vom Kriege" which she took with her.

Itaru opens the stone box in which the gold stick is located, a sweet smelling dust pours out, which pattern describes as a terrible trap.

Kagura promises those present a reward and disappears with the stick. At that moment Johan warns Itaru that the princess intends to blast them all under rubble. Itaru and the others manage to escape in time, but his sister is seriously injured. Johan, who has meanwhile taken Porwit hostage, enables the survivors to escape with the princess' glider.

When one tries to go to a hospital, it turns out that the princess had all who escaped, put out to be wanted, on the grounds that they had caused the deaths of the remaining eighteen archaeologists.

Since Porwit Itaru's father assures that no one will be harmed and Norin's condition does not improve, the decision is made to give up. Johan is against it and leaves the group, he advises that all crimes that are accused of them should be passed on to him. He gives the stolen gold stick to Itaru, he keeps the book himself. He explains that he will hide the book in order to be able to use it as a basis for negotiations in the worst case, and he recommends the same to Itaru. In captivity, Itaru refuses to put the blame for the events on Johan and finally finds that he is also being held in quarantine. When an eye appears on his skin, Itaru realizes that he has contracted a terrible disease. The archaeologists infected with the mask tumor are surgically removed from their growths, but without success, but when the doctors expose a healthy member of the group to the pathogen of the mask tumor, Itaru realizes that they are not patients, but guinea pigs. Itaru's father was hit hardest; he has to be kept alive with a heart-lung machine. A final, daring operation is supposed to stop the tumor. Doctors separate the face and brain from the body, but the tumor continues to grow and ultimately leads to death. Itaru is later brought before Princess Kagura, who reveals that she is also infected with the mask tumor. This has transformed her entire right breast into a face. The experiments on the archaeologists served to find a cure for them. Finally, Itaru is supposed to serve the princess' hobby, the breeding of mandrakes. These should be able to be generated by the post-mortem ejaculation of executed people. To do this, Itarus legs are coated with sulfuric acid. When he apparently died after being in terrible pain, he was supposed to be burned in the basement of the palace. Itaru is saved by Johan before his cremation can take place. Itaru has to find out that his hair has turned white. His legs are destroyed by the acid and his once melodious voice is also gone. Johan asks him to go with him and get the gold stick. When the two go to the hiding place, Johan betrays Itaru and shoots him.

If itaru falls into an abyss near the hiding place, it can take the gold stick with him and keeps it. The story briefly tells how Baron Muster infiltrated Mehaos' residence instead of the Mars aristocratic Mehaos, and with the help of his hunchbacked servant Miguel, while the Mars storms took over there. When the nobleman’s wife and his daughter Lotte are in front of him, Muster reveals that he killed Mehanos and tells the story of Krista Mortem, which his father invented but kept secret for fear of abuse, philosophizes about the question of evil , declaring that he believes that all of the terrible things that happened to him were punishment for the deeds he is about to commit. When, after the storms, the mistress' grandfather wants to see that everything is in order in her property, he only finds mother and daughter as statues.

Publications

Manga

The manga first appeared in Japan in 1991 in the Shueisha publishing house's Business Jump magazine . In the Japanese original, Alita is called Gally . This was changed by the American publisher, Viz Communications (now VIZ Media ), because the name Gally seemed too good to them.

Three editions of Carlsen Comics were published in Germany, the first from 1996. This edition consisted of 100-page albums in A4 format , which were mirrored in order to adapt them to the reading direction usual in Germany. After 12 volumes the series was canceled. From October 2000 the second edition appeared in Japanese reading direction and in paperback format , this was concluded with the ninth volume. This version also includes the author's notes. In 2003 the special edition with a cardboard slipcase was published, which includes all nine volumes of the paperback edition. The Perfect Edition followed in 2018. The four books have a slightly larger format. The volumes initially appeared individually; a slipcase with all volumes and a poster followed after the publication of the individual volumes.

The follow-up series, Battle Angel Alita: Last Order , has also been available in German since January 2004 . All 19 volumes have been published. Last Order does not tie in with the last volume of Battle Angel Alita (Volume 9: Hyper Future Vision), but continues the story right after Chapter 51 - Yoko's destruction . The writer, Yukito Kishiro, wasn't happy with how the series ended. He was forced to end the narrative early for several reasons. Last Order should continue to tell the story as it was originally conceived. 19 volumes were published in Japan, publication in Evening magazine ended on January 28, 2014. Here, too, there is a Perfection Edition, which only appeared in six separate volumes and with the last volume in a slipcase.

In the appendix, the books usually offer some details about the world of Alita, e.g. B. an overview of the cloud city, or a short humorous manga. Since Yukito Kishiro is still working on the series, he likes to include ideas for characters from fans in his manga. The drawings by the fans can also be found in the appendix.

The series Gunnm Kasei Senki (also Gunnm Mars Chronicles ) by Yukito Kishiro has appeared in the Evening magazine in Japan since October 2014 as a sequel to Last Order . The series has been published in German by Carlsen Manga since May 2016 in seven volumes.

Anime

In Japan, Animate Film produced two episodes of an OVA series in 1993 with support from Madhouse . After that, the series was discontinued due to poor sales. For most of the publications outside of Japan, including the German edition, both episodes were cut into a 50-minute film. Alita's character design has been slightly changed so that she appears smaller in the anime. The plot revolves around the story of Alita and Jugo and ends with his fall from the supply line to Zalem . It shows some changes compared to the manga and introduces a new character with Chiren . Chiren is the female counterpart to Ido , she also wears the initiation mark on her forehead that identifies her as a citizen of Zalem .

Motion picture

The director James Cameron had repeatedly stated since 1998 that he was interested in the Alita material and wanted to make a real film. Since he initially wanted to finish Avatar 2 and 3, the start of production was delayed to 2017. Cameron considered handing the film over to another director, but decided to stay true to the project due to his great interest in the manga. The script is to be written by Laeta Kalogridis , with the first four volumes of the manga to be taken up. The movie (a real-life version) was released in German cinemas on February 14, 2019 under the title " Alita: Battle Angel ".

In the recent past, several films made use of the plot and world of Battle Angel Alita

  • Astroboy from 2009, film adaptation of the manga series of the same name, but using the plot of Battle Angel Alita instead of the one from his own manga
  • Elysium from 2013 clearly uses the scenario of the divided world consisting of an earthly junk town and a utopian sky platform. Matt Damon plays a character who corresponds to Alitas, but there is called Max De Costa.
