In the friendly against Manchester United on May 17, 1960 in New York, he suffered a serious knee injury, which is why he later had to be declared a sports disabled. When the new coach Max Merkel began a successful era for the "Blauen" from the 1961/62 season, he was no longer a player due to the consequences of his injuries and therefore did not experience the start of the Bundesliga from the 1963 season / 64.

On December 19, 2011, he died of cancer. He left a wife and two daughters.
