Liisi Oterma ( 1915 - April 4, 2001 ) was a Finnish astronomer and the first woman to receive a doctorate in astronomy in Finland. She is famous for her astronomical observations, including 54 asteroids and three comets .

Life

Oterma studied at the University of Turku - first in mathematics, then in the newly established astronomy course. Together with Yrjö Väisälä , whose student she was initially, she was instrumental in setting up astronomical research in Finland . She was the first woman to do a PhD in astronomy science in Finland . Her doctoral thesis dealt with a theme of telescope - optics . She later received a professorship at the University of Turku and succeeded Väisäläs as director of the Tuorla Observatory .

During her career, Liisi Oterma discovered numerous asteroids as well as many others as part of one of the most intensive asteroid search programs in Finland. a. the comets 38P / Stephan-Oterma and 39P / Oterma . The asteroid (1529) Oterma , which was discovered in 1938 by her mentor Yrjö Väisälä, was dedicated to her. Oterma was versatile and talented. Danish professor Anders Reiz said Liisi Oterma was silent in eleven different languages, including German, English, French, Spanish, Hungarian, Italian and Esperanto. She published her dissertation in French in 1955 under the title "Recherches portant sur des télescopes pourvus d'une lame correctrice".
