Like Swimming is the fourth studio album by the American low rock band Morphine . It was released on March 11, 1997 on DreamWorks Records and remained the last release before frontman Mark Sandman's death and the associated breakup of Morphine.

History of origin

After the previous releases at Rykodisc received little attention, Morphine switched to DreamWorks Records, then a major label . The songs Early to Bed and Murder for the Money were released as singles, and music videos for the first song and French Fries w / Pepper were also produced.

A new edition of Like Swimming appeared again in 2002 with Rykodisc.

successes

Like Swimming reached number 67 on the Billboard Top 200 and stayed there for six weeks. The video for Early to Bed was nominated for a 1998 Grammy in the Short Form Music Video category, but lost to Got Till It's Gone by Janet Jackson .

The reaction of the critics was still only moderate; Allmusic as well as Rolling Stone magazine awarded 3 out of 5 possible stars. Criticisms included the immature sounding production and the lack of musical development since the previous album Yes .

  5. Allmusic Guide: Some of the material doesn't sound fully developed, almost as if the Boston trio was rushed to complete the album.
  6. ^ Rolling Stone: "Morphine's power alley [...] allows few stylistic detours and, evidently, no exit. Four albums in, the band is riding the same sound like a slot car; even the welcome flashes of instrumental variety on 'Like Swimming' [...] don't lead the band far from its usual track. "
