Lili Bech

Lili Bech , even Lilli Beck and Lily Beck (* 29. December 1885 in Copenhagen ; † 20th January 1939 in Aarhus , Denmark ) was a Danish actress of stage and silent film.

Live and act

Lili Bech received her artistic training in her native Copenhagen and made her stage debut in 1905 at the Folketeatret in the Danish capital. In the same year she went on tour with the small stage company Jens Trap Walters, which she did not complete until 1910. In that year Bech returned to the Volkstheater and was later able to achieve great success with Delilah in the ancient drama “ Samson and Delilah ”.

The artist was brought in front of the camera for the first time in 1911. In the flourishing Danish silent film of the last few years before the outbreak of the First World War, Bech quickly made a career and became one of the well-known screen actresses in her country and Sweden. Her central directors included Alfred Lind , Mauritz Stiller , Robert Dinesen and Holger-Madsen . Mostly she was seen in family dramas and social melodramas, in which she was almost always given leading roles. In 1916 she also appeared in a guest role in Stiller's Ikarus , a great success with audiences and critics in the northern neighboring country. At that time, Lili Bech was married to the famous Swedish director Victor Sjöström , one of four husbands. Sjöström had given her leading roles in some of his productions.

With the decline of Danish cinema after the end of the war in 1918, Lili Bech hardly appeared in front of the camera and concentrated again on her stage work (mostly touring theater). Gradually being forgotten, Lily Bech also had to be satisfied with less important engagements at insignificant small stages such as the casino in Aarhus and the Moulin Rouge in Vejle in her later years. At the moment of her sudden death at the beginning of 1939, Bech had just returned to the Aarhus Casino.
