Liljeborgia is a genus in the family Liljeborgiidae in the order of the amphipods .

features

The species of the genus Liljeborgia are representatives of the macrobenthos , that is, they are more than a millimeter large members of the marine communities on the sea floor. Outwardly, they are very similar to the members of the Gammaridae family to which they have long been counted. Your physique is elongated and flattened on the sides. However, they do not have any calcium deposits in their chitin shell .

To differentiate the species, a formula is used, among other things, that describes the number of backward-pointing teeth on the back of the individual segments of the abdomen . Liljeborgia dubia , for example, has the formula 5–5–1–1–1 on the segments (from the first pleonite to the back towards the telson ).

distribution

The species of the genus Liljeborgia are widespread inhabitants of the sea floor.

Way of life

Little is known about the way of life of the genus Liljeborgia . Most species seem to live as epifauna on the surfaces of loose sediments or on other organisms ( corals , plants). They feed on detritus there . Liljeborgia aequabilis is always found in the company of hermit crabs on the coasts of Eastern and Southern Australia. Liljeborgia joergpeteri lives on coral sand in the Great Barrier Reef .

Systematics

External system

Liljeborgia is the only genus of the subfamily Liljeborgiinae. Within the family Liljeborgiidae there is another subfamily, the Idunellinae with the only genus Idunella . As early as 1894, Georg Ossian Sars proposed to combine the two genres in a separate family, but this was only implemented in 1899 by Thomas Roscoe Stebbing .
