Idunella is a genus in the family Liljeborgiidae in the order of the amphipods .

features

Outwardly, the species of the genus Idunella are very similar to the members of the Gammaridae family, to which they were also counted for a long time. Your physique is elongated and flattened on the sides. However, they do not have any calcium deposits in their chitin shell .

The genus Idunella differs from other amphipods particularly in the shape of its mouthparts.

distribution

The species of the genus Idunella occur worldwide only in tropical to warm temperate zones. Only one species is known from the Arctic Circle , no species has yet been discovered in Antarctica . Their occurrence ranges from the marine shallow water zones to a depth of 1288 m.

Systematics

External system

Idunella is the only genus of the subfamily Idunellinae. Within the family Liljeborgiidae there is another subfamily, the Liljeborgiinae, also with only one genus, Liljeborgia . Already in his first description of the genus idunella in 1894 beat Georg Ossian Sars uniting the two genera found in their own family. This was only implemented in 1899 by Thomas Roscoe Stebbing with the establishment of the Liljeborgiidae family.

Internal system

The genus Idunella was established by GO Sars in 1894 and named after the Norse goddess Idun . The type is Idunella aeqvicornis , which was first described by Sars in 1877 as Lilljeborgia æqvicornis .

In 2010 the genus Listriella was synonymous with Idunella . 37 species, which had been spun off from Idunella in 1991 and transferred to Listriella , have now returned to the genus. Previously, only the type species Idunella aeqvicornis and Idunella pirata remained in Idunella . In the same work in which Cédric d'Udekem d'Acoz had united the two genera, he also established the subfamily Idunellinae, in anticipation of a new division of the species into several genera. So far, however, no clear morphological distinguishing features could be found that could be used as a basis for such a breakdown. Molecular genetic studies fail due to the fact that the proteins of most of the available specimens are impaired by the preparation using formalin .
