The village is located in the southeast of the municipality in the side valley Valeille . At this point the mountain streams Urtier and Valeille flow together, which together with the side stream Valnontey form the main stream of the Cognetal , the Grant Eyvia .

The group of houses is a popular travel destination. It is located on the edge of the Gran Paradiso National Park. Hiking trails in the high mountains and through the National Park begin here. The place is a stage destination of the Aosta Valley long-distance hiking trail Haute Route n ° 2 and the ultra- trail Tor des Géants .

The waterfalls of the Urtier torrent are a well-known sight.

The historian Joseph-Marie Henry explains the origin of the name Lillaz as follows: The field name , which also occurs in other communities in the Aosta Valley, comes from the Latin insula . It is used in the region for flat areas in the terrain that are on a watercourse and are often flooded. Lillaz is pronounced in the Franco-Provençal patois of the Aosta Valley without the final z, ie «Lilla».
