Lim Chulwoo or Lim Chul-woo (born October 15, 1954 in Wando , South Chŏlla Province ) is a South Korean writer .
Life
Lim was born in a village on the South Korean island of Wando . He studied English Language and Literature at Sogang University in Seoul . He later moved to Chonnam University in Kwangju , where he received his doctorate in 1996. As a student, he witnessed the 1980 Kwangju uprising , in which numerous demonstrators were killed by the military.
Most of Lim's works deal with the 1980 uprising and the Korean War as a backdrop and analyze the guilt feelings of those who were powerless in the face of political oppression and violence. A year after the Kwangju massacre, he published his first short story The Dog Thief , in which the division of the country and the violence of ideological conflicts are promised. Lim's goal of documenting the tragedy of the uprising culminated in Spring Day , a five-volume novel written over an eight-year period.
Lim is a professor of creative writing at Hanshin University . He has received numerous awards for his work.
