Lima group
The Lima Group ( Spanish and Portuguese Grupo de Lima , English Lima Group ) is a multilateral alliance of 14 American states that was founded due to the crisis in Venezuela .
According to the Lima Declaration, signed and published on August 8, 2017 in the Peruvian capital Lima , the aim of the union is to restore democracy in Venezuela. Founding members are Argentina , Brazil , Canada , Chile , Colombia , Costa Rica , Guatemala , Honduras , Mexico , Panama , Paraguay and Peru . Later the countries of Guyana and St. Lucia joined them.
Positions
The Lima Group has repeatedly condemned the actions of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro . After a meeting of the member states in Lima, all 14 member states except Mexico declared Maduro's new term of office to be illegitimate. The Lima group called for power to be returned to the Venezuelan parliament and for new elections to be held to restore democracy. After a meeting on February 4, 2019 in Ottawa , Canada , the member states reiterated their call for new democratic elections and expressed their support for interim president Juan Guaido . The group of states was then attacked by Maduro, who described the statement as ridiculous . Another meeting of the states of the Lima Group on February 25, 2019 in Bogota , Colombia - in the presence of US Vice President Mike Pence - ended with the demand for a trial against Maduro before the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity . The background to this demand was the blockade of the importation of relief supplies by Maduro's government. The representatives of Mexico, Guyana and St. Lucia were absent from this meeting.
