The yellow-tailed flounder ( Limanda ferruginea , syn .: Pleuronectes ferruginaeus ) is a right-eyed flatfish with an elongated-oval body. It is about half as wide as it is long. It can reach a length of 64 cm with a weight of 1.5 kg. Your eyes are so close together that the round eye sockets almost touch. The color of the skin is brownish to slate-olive on top with irregular, larger rust-colored spots ( ferruginea ). The caudal fin is yellowish - a distinctive feature of this species (hence the name). On the blind side it is white except for the yellowish tail stalk.

The yellowtail flounder is widespread in the Northwest Atlantic, it occurs from southern Labrador (Canada) to Chesapeake Bay (USA).

It lives mainly on sandy to muddy soils at depths of 40 to 85 meters. Their diet consists mainly of small invertebrates, mostly bristle worms , crustaceans and occasionally small fish such as sand eels and capelin . It is fished commercially and primarily marketed in North America. Experiments with breeding in aquaculture are carried out. It has a high reproductivity, the doubling time of the population is 15 months.
