Pellionia is a genus of plants belonging tothe nettle family (Urticaceae), the species of which are common in the tropics and subtropics .

description

The Pellionia species are perennial herbaceous plants or many species are lignified at the bottom, so they are subshrubs . The non-lignified shoots are often a bit fleshy and break off easily. However, broken branches can easily take root again. The plants have no stinging hairs .

The leaves are alternate . From the original, opposite, distal (two-line) foliage , one leaf is reduced and either very small or completely absent. The veins of the leaves are reticulate, with many species not only having the central rib on each side but also two strong secondary ribs branching off slightly above the base of the leaf. The leaves are asymmetrical at the base. The leaf margin can be whole or toothed. The normal foliage leaves each have two stipules .

There are monoecious as well as dioecious plants in the genus and even within individual species , with the flowers also being unisexual in the first case. The flowers are in axillary zymous inflorescences . The perianth is four or five lobed. In the male flowers, it is about half fused. The perianth lobes of the female flowers are often of unequal length.
