Roman tower Idstein-Dasbach

The Römerturm Idstein-Dasbach is a reconstruction of the Roman Limes watchtower Wp 3/26 and was completed in 2002.

The Upper Germanic-Raetian Limes is 550 km long, from Eining near Regensburg to Rheinbrohl am Rhein, the largest ground monument in Germany and has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. With Limes (lat. Grenzweg / -wall) the border fortifications of this are the Roman Empire called the n. Chr. Were built at the end of the 1st century.

This border was monitored by more than 900 towers, which were built in wood from around 80 AD. Stone towers followed, which were plastered from 145 AD. It is known from excavations that the white plaster often had cracked joints that were painted in terracotta . This gave the impression of a beautiful ashlar masonry.

According to historians, the most authentic reconstruction of a Roman watchtower from AD 145 was planned at Idstein - Dasbach on the occasion of the 2001 Hessentag in Idstein by the Freundeskreis Römerturm Idstein eV and professionally supervised by the Saalburg Museum. It's guard post 3/26. The tower has a height of around 13 m and a floor area of around 28 m². The Romans used ladders to get into the tower. The three floors of the reconstructed tower are accessible via stairs . From the battlements at a height of 8.5 m there is a wide view of Idstein and the Taunus . In the tower there is a small exhibition on the subject of “The Romans in the Taunus”, which can be viewed every Sunday afternoon in the summer months and on other special dates. The tower can also be climbed on these days.

The course of the Limes palisade and the location of a wooden watchtower were verified in a geomagnetic survey in 2012 - so far, wooden towers on the 6.5 km stretch of the Idstein section were not known, which suggests that this line was relocated earlier.
