The Swainson Warbler ( Limnothlypis swainsonii ) is a small bird in the family of the Wood Warbler (Parulidae) and the only species in the genus Limnothlypis . The bird was named by the first descriptor John James Audubon after his friend, the natural scientist William Swainson .

features

Swainson warbler have a body size of about 14 centimeters. The crown, neck area and top are olive brown to light brown. On the underside they have pale yellow plumage. A thin gray to black line runs from the base of the beak over the eyes to the rear. Males and females have the same plumage color.

Reproduction

Their breeding season begins at the beginning of May and lasts until the beginning of July. The female builds a large, bowl-shaped nest made of leaves, moss and grass above the ground. A clutch consists of two to five eggs that are hatched in a period of 13 to 15 days. After hatching, the young birds fledge after 10 to 12 days. They then stay with the adult birds for around two to three weeks.

distribution

The rarely found Swainson Warbler occurs during the breeding season in the southeast of North America . They inhabit swamps, peat bogs and the lower regions of the forests. Over the winter they move to Mexico , Yucatán and Belize , to Honduras , Jamaica and the Antilles, among others . The populations have decreased. The main cause is the destruction of their habitats and parasitism by the brown-headed cowbird ( Molothrus ater ).
