Lin Sternal (born 1987 in Berlin ) is a German film director and screenwriter .

Life

Lin Sternal has been studying at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy since 2008 with a focus on directing / documentary film . She made short and medium-length films.

She graduated with her film Ice Girl in April 2015 and was nominated for the Grimme Prize . The documentary tells of a triangular relationship within the microcosm of figure skating, which is characterized by pressure, competition and projection. Lisa, who defines herself through her sport, is plagued by adolescent self-doubt, while her younger sister Sophie seems to succeed in everything with ease. Her mother, driven by her own unfulfilled dreams, tries with much caring devotion to take care of her older daughter. But the more she tries to get everything right, the more miserably she seems to fail. They are observations of a fragile network of relationships, the protagonists of which repel each other without loosening and attract each other without being very close.

Sternal also took part in the Documentary Campus 2016 with her documentary Perro . The children's film will celebrate its world premiere at the Berlinale in February 2020 and will be screened in the Generation Kplus section . It is about the adolescent Perro, who lives with his grandmother in Bangkukuk, in the jungle of southern Nicaragua. Despite all its isolation, the indigenous community is confronted with change: over the radio, people learn of the government's plan to build the almost 300-kilometer-long Gran Canal, which is to connect the Atlantic with the Pacific. 120,000 people are threatened with forced relocation , and Perro and his grandmother's home is also in danger. The older generation calls on God, Perro's grandmother wants to protect her grandson with prayers. At first he lives on his usual life, goes fishing, looks after the animals on the small farm and wanders through the jungle with his friends. However, when Perro's teacher is transferred to another location, the withdrawn, sensitive boy has to go to his aunt in town. He has to say goodbye and a new beginning and find his own way into a world still unknown to him. His domestic pig Piggy accompanies him. The media and film company Baden-Württemberg funded the production in February 2017 with 105,500 euros, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media in December 2016 with 95,000 euros.

Sternal lives as a freelance director in Berlin.
