Lina Galli (born 1899 in Parenzo , Austria-Hungary ; died June 24, 1993 in Trieste ) was an Italian writer from Istria .

Life

Lina Galli grew up in Parenzo, which had a predominantly Italian-speaking population, and saw at the end of the First World War how the goal of Italian irredentism to unite the area of Venezia Giulia with Italy was achieved. For the interests and concerns of the Croatian population in Istria and the Slovene in Trieste and the surrounding area showed no understanding and took the efforts to Italianisation towards the Slavic population. Galli lived in Parenzo until 1931 and then moved to Trieste. During the time of Italian fascism , Galli participated in the art competitions of the 1936 Summer Olympics in 1936 .

At the end of the war in 1945, the southern part of Istria, with its home town of Poreč, immediately fell to Yugoslavia and the Italian-speaking population was expelled from there. Galli is very affected by this. In the dispute about the future of the International Zone Trieste , which was also influenced by the Cold War , she felt she was in a "time of darkness". In the post-war period, Galli gave the Italian expellees from Istria a voice dominated by sadness and gloom: Notte sull'Istria .

In Trieste, Galli was involved in the literary life of the city and in the women's organization Federazione Italiana Donne Arti Professioni e Affari . Her literary contributions have been published in various magazines in the region and in the daily newspaper Il Piccolo .

From 1942 onwards, her friend Livia Veneziani, Italo Svevo's widow , had begun with Galli's help to compile the material for a biography of her husband, which was published in 1950 under the title Vita di mio Marito in an edition of 350 numbered copies in the "Lo Zibaldone" edition. the artist and publisher Anita Pittoni appeared. In 1958, Pittoni published a new edition of this book, limited to 900 copies, which was not discussed in detail and which, due to numerous knowledgeable comments and pictures published only here, is still one of the most important biographical sources on the life of the writer Svevo and his family. For copyright reasons and because the family of the writer did not agree to some intimate details published in 1958, all further editions and all later translations, including the German, were based on the original text of the 1950 edition published by Galli. Only an English edition published by Libris in London in 1989 received references (by John Gatt-Rutter) to the footnotes of the Pittoni edition, which are indispensable for Svevo biographers.

Galli has received various Italian literary prizes and recognitions.
