Melocactus neryi is a species of the genus Melocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet neryi honors the then governor of the Brazilian state of Amazonas, Mr. Nery.
description
Melocactus neryi grows with dark blue-green to yellowish green, depressed spherical shoots , which reach heights of 5.5 to 18 centimeters with diameters of 7 to 20 centimeters. There are nine to 15 sharp-edged ribs . The initially dark brown to yellowish brown thorns turn reddish brown with age and are drowned out thickly whitish gray. The mostly single central spine is curved upwards and 1 to 2.5 centimeters long. The up to 2.9 centimeters long six to ten radial spines are curved. The cephalium , which consists of fine, dense, reddish to slightly orange-red bristles , is up to 5 centimeters high and has a diameter of 4 to 9 centimeters.
The pink to purple carmine-colored flowers are 1.8 to 2.2 inches long and 0.8 to 1 cm in diameter. Sometimes they hardly protrude from the cephalium. The pink to lilac-colored fruits are 1 to 2 inches long and sometimes flattened.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Melocactus neryi is common in western and central Venezuela , in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Roraima, and in Suriname .
It was first described in 1901 by Karl Moritz Schumann . A nomenclature synonym is Cactus neryi (K.Schum) Britton & Rose (1922) .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
