Linden is the second largest city in Guyana . It consists of the districts Mackenzie, Wismar and Christianburg and is located in the Upper Demerara-Berbice district . The city has 29,298 inhabitants (Census 2002) and is connected to the capital Georgetown by a toll road and the continuously navigable Demerara River .
In the vicinity of Linden there are large bauxite deposits that are extensively mined in opencast mines (60 to 90 m depth) and processed in the nearby industrial complex. A large part of the bauxite is ground and processed into calcined bauxite in large kilns, which is exported worldwide for the construction of refractory plants. The factory in Linden covers 90% of world demand. A second factory processes bauxite into aluminum oxide . The dirty smoke emitted from dozens of factory chimneys causes enormous environmental pollution for the people who live here.
In 1946, Mackenzie High School was established in Linden .
