Lindenius albilabris is a hymenoptera fromthe Crabronidae family .
features
The wasp reaches a body length of 6 to 8 millimeters (females) or 4 to 7 millimeters (males). The point eyes ( Ocelli ) are obtuse to each other. In females, the mandibles , the basal part of the antennae (scapus) and the thorax are colored black. The males have strongly curved metatarsi on the middle pair of legs, which are very hairy at the base. The species can be confused with some species of the genus Crossocerus , which, however, have point eyes that are at right angles to one another. Their dorsal field is also structured differently.
Occurrence
The species is widespread in Europe and Asia, east to Mongolia and colonizes different habitats. It has been proven up to heights of 950 meters above sea level. The species flies in one generation from June to September. It is widespread in Central Europe and is one of the most common digger wasp species.
Way of life
The females create their nests in the slightly compacted, horizontal soil. The nest entrance often has a crater-shaped edge. The nest has a 10 to 20 centimeter deep main passage, at the end of which up to ten horizontal side passages are created, each ending in a cell. In the south of the distribution area the brood is mainly supplied with soft bugs of the genus Lygus , in northern Europe mainly small species of flies are introduced. The approach to the nest takes place directly without dropping the prey in front of the entrance. Myrmosa atra and Hedychridium coriaceum have been identified as cuckoo wasps .
