The Lindsaeaceae are a family of the true ferns (Polypodiopsida).

features

The roots have a sklerenchymatic outer bark and an inner bark layer six cells thick (not in lonchitis and cystodium ). The rhizomes are short to long creeping, protostelic with internal phloem , in a few taxa also a Solenostele. There are narrow, hairy scales on the rhizomes. The leaf blades are one to three times pinnate, rarely more often, mostly glabrous. The nerves terminate freely, branch bifurcated, rarely anastomosing .

The sori are at or near the leaf margin (marginal or submarginal). The indusium opens towards the edge of the leaf (extrors), sometimes it is also attached to the sides, or the sori are covered by the bent-back leaf edge (in lonchitis ). The spores are tetrahedral and trilet (have a three-pointed scar), rarely they are bilateral and monolet (simple scar).

The gametophyte is green and heart-shaped.

The basic chromosome number is x = 34, 38, 39, 44, 47, 48, 49, 50 or 51.

Systematics

The family comprises eight genera with a total of around 200 species:

Lindsaea microphylla in Australia
  • Cystodium J. Sm. , With the only species that occurs in Malesia and New Guinea:
  • Lindsaea Dryand. ex Sm. , with about 80–150 species in the tropics as far as Australia and Japan. The generic name honors the Jamaican botanist John Lindsay (? - 1803).
  • Lonchitis L. , with about six species in tropical America in Africa and in Madagascar
  • Odontosoria Fée , with around nine species in tropical America and Africa
  • Ormoloma maxon , with only one species found in tropical America:
  • Sphenomeris maxon , with about 12 species
  • Tapeinidium (C. Presl) C. Chr. , With about 11 species from East Asia to the Samoa Islands
  • Xyropteris K.U. Kramer , with only one species on Borneo:

In the family description of Smith et al. (2006) also includes the Cystodiaceae and Lonchitidaceae, some of which are run as independent families. The classification of lonchitis appears strange due to the morphological characteristics, but is well supported by molecular biological studies. In this description, the family is very likely monophyletic .
