The Lindsay Island is a former island in the Philippine Sea in the northern Pacific . She was discovered on December 25, 1848 by the British schooner Amelia under Captain Lindsay at about 19 ° 20 ′ north and 141 ° 15 ′ 30 ″ east.
It consisted of a 12 m high and almost 7.5 km long dark brown, bare rock. Lindsay was aware of its positioning fairly certain he the accuracy of his timepiece previously only two days in the Mariana Islands agrihan and Asuncion had checked.
Captain Bartlett of the British barque Britomart could not find Lindsay Island again in 1869 under the specified position. In contrast, he sighted a 120-150 m long reef at 19 ° 18 'north and 141 ° 34' east at sea level . Since the Lindsay Island was also searched in vain by the US ship Alert in 1881 , it is very likely that it was an underwater volcanic eruption like the islands of Ferdinandea (off Sicily), Fonuafoʻou (Tonga, also Falcon Island) or Surtsey (off Iceland) acted. In contrast to the latter, Lindsay Island did not prove to be permanent and fell victim to the abrasion of the surf.
