history

Linea Aspera was founded in November 2011 by Australian Alison Lewis and British Ryan Ambrige in London. The duo shared the compositional tasks. Ambridge took over the composition of the electronic music while Lewis wrote the lyrics and planned the vocal composition. In addition, Ambridge took over the studio work of recording , mixing and mastering .

With the self-titled EP released in January 2012 , which was self-published, Linea Aspera was able to achieve high international recognition in the black scene . The German dark wave label No Emb Blanc and the American label Dark Entries Records reacted and signed Linea Aspera. No Emb Blanc, who already had similar artists under contract with Sixth June and Nina Belief , released the self-titled album on CD, which was released in 2012, while the label Dark Entries , which specializes in re-releases of artists such as Eleven Pond , The Neon Judgment and Dark Day Records released a vinyl version. The album contained both new recordings of the pieces published on the EP, as well as new songs and, like the EP, was exclusively received positively. Markus Kolodziej of the album for the Ox-Fanzine -reviewed, presented Linea Aspera "a debut album [is] that the best in terms of minimal synth and Coldwave heard what has appeared in recent years." Also in the magazine Gothic is the The album received similar praise and was also described as one of the best debut albums in the genre. The "unity of sound and visuality" is particularly emphasized. In the review of the webzine Gothic.at it was even called a "brilliant masterpiece". The album was also highly praised in a review of the Black Magazine webzine and declared one of the best albums of 2012.

Following the release, the duo played a few concerts. Linea Aspera made the last appearance at the Graunzone Festival in Amsterdam. Lewis and Ambridge subsequently announced their dissolution. With Linea Aspera II , the duo released three remaining tracks in October 2013 on the Belgian label Weyrd Son Records in a 12 "vinyl EP limited to 300 copies. Linea Aspera II was hardly reviewed. Philippe Blackmarquis rated the EP in Peek-a- Boo Magazine positive and referred to two “must-have songs”, but described the EP as an unfinished work, which only intensified the grief for the disbanded band. In January 2017, the duo released another EP with two tracks that were previously on Compilations came out after the original phonograms were no longer available. The EP Compilation Excavation was only available as a download from Bandcamp .

style

The music played by Linea Aspera is classified as Electro Wave, Synthie-Pop and Minimal Electro . Despite not playing any guitar, the term cold wave is used to categorize the music. Lebanon Hanover and Sixth June in particular are named as comparative figures. However, Linea Aspera is "more straightforward and danceable". In particular, the music stands above the cultivated minimalism in a direct line of tradition of the Dark Wave of the 1980s, but transfers this to its time. In the review of Black Magazine, the music is described as “brisk minimal synth pop with influences from EBM, industrial and wave”.

The music is mainly played on analog synthesizers, other instruments and computer programs are hardly used. The duo's equipment consists of the Roland SH-09, Roland Juno 6, Vermona DRM MKiii, Korg Poly 800 and Analogue Solutions Semblance synthesizers. Ambridge assigns a warm sound to these instruments. In reviews, the music is described as cold and gloomy.

Lewis' ethereal singing is described as haunting, dark and powerful, sad and melodic as well as cool, crystal clear and distinguished. Even she gives HTRK and Lisa Gerrard as vocal and Maynard James Keenan and Morrissey as lyrical influences.
