Ling-To Monastery
The Ling To Monastery or Ling To Tsz ( Chinese 靈 渡 寺 / 灵 渡 寺 , Pinyin Língdù Sì , Jyutping Ling 1 dou 6 Zi 6 , English Ling To Monastery - "Monastery of the soul crossing") is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Hong Kong with a history of over 1,400 years. It is located in Ha Tsuen, one of the oldest village parishes in Yuen Long District ( 元朗 廈村 / 元朗 厦村 , Yuánlǎng Xiàcūn , Jyutping Jyun 4 long 5 Haa 6 cyun 1 ) in the New Territories . The monastery dates back to the time of the Southern and Northern Dynasties , according to other sources, to the time of the end of the Eastern Jin Dynasty . The buildings of the monastery range from the time of the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Song Dynasty as well as from the Ming , Qing to the Chinese Republic (1912-1949) .
The monastery is one of the three most important Buddhist monasteries in Hong Kong and is one of the listed buildings in Hong Kong of Category II (officially: Grade II), the second highest monument preservation category or protection level of the Hong Kong monument preservation authority.
